“Duty demands nothing in turn; How can the world recompense rain?”

கைம்மாறு வேண்டா கடப்பாடு மாரிமாட்டு
என் ஆற்றுங் கொல்லோ உலகு.

“All the wealth that toils give Is meant to serve those who deserve”

தாளாற்றித் தந்த பொருளெல்லாம் தக்கார்க்கு
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு.

“In heav'n and earth 'tis hard to find A greater good than being kind”

புத்தே ளுலகத்தும் ஈண்டும் பெறலரிதே
ஒப்புரவின் நல்ல பிற.

“He lives who knows befitting act Others are deemed as dead in fact”

ஒத்த தறவோன் உயிர்வாழ்வான் மற்றையான்
செத்தாருள் வைக்கப் படும்.

“The wealth that wise and kind do make Is like water that fills a lake”

ஊருணி நீர்நிறைந் தற்றே உலகவாம்
பேரறி வாளன் திரு.

“Who plenty gets and plenty gives Is like town-tree teeming with fruits”

பயன்மரம் உள்ளூர்ப் பழுத்தற்றால் செல்வம்
நயனுடை யான்கண் படின்.

“The wealth of a wide-hearted soul Is a herbal tree that healeth all”

மருந்தாகித் தப்பா மரத்தற்றால் செல்வம்
பெருந்தகை யான்கண் படின்.

“Though seers may fall on evil days Their sense of duty never strays”

இடனில் பருவத்தும் ஒப்புரவிற்கு ஒல்கார்
கடனறி காட்சி யவர்.

“The good man's poverty and grief Is want of means to give relief”

நயனுடையான் நல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயும்நீர
செய்யாது அமைகலா வாறு.

“By good if ruin comes across Sell yourself to save that loss”

ஒப்புரவி னால்வரும் கேடெனின் அஃதொருவன்
விற்றுக்கோள் தக்க துடைத்து.

“To give the poor is charity The rest is loan and vanity”

வறியார்க்கொன்று ஈவதே ஈகைமற் றெல்லாம்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து.

“To beg is bad e'en from the good To give is good, were heaven forbid”

நல்லாறு எனினும் கொளல்தீது மேலுலகம்
இல்லெனினும் ஈதலே நன்று.

“No pleading, \"I am nothing worth,\" But giving marks a noble birth”

இலனென்னும் எவ்வம் உரையாமை ஈதல்
குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள.

“The cry for alms is painful sight Until the giver sees him bright”

இன்னாது இரக்கப் படுதல் இரந்தவர்
இன்முகங் காணும் அளவு.

“Higher's power which hunger cures Than that of penance which endures”

ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பசிஆற்றல் அப்பசியை
மாற்றுவார் ஆற்றலின் பின்.

“Drive from the poor their gnawing pains If room you seek to store your gains”

அற்றார் அழிபசி தீர்த்தல் அஃதொருவன்
பெற்றான் பொருள்வைப் புழி.

“Who shares his food with those who need Hunger shall not harm his creed”

பாத்தூண் மரீஇ யவனைப் பசியென்னும்
தீப்பிணி தீண்டல் அரிது.

“The joy of give and take they lose Hard-hearted rich whose hoarding fails”

ஈத்துவக்கும் இன்பம் அறியார்கொல் தாமுடைமை
வைத்திழக்கும் வன்க ணவர்.

“Worse than begging is that boarding Alone what one's greed is hoarding”

இரத்தலின் இன்னாது மன்ற நிரப்பிய
தாமே தமியர் உணல்.

“Nothing is more painful than death Yet more is pain of giftless dearth”

சாதலின் இன்னாத தில்லை இனிததூஉம்
ஈதல் இயையாக் கடை.

“The wealth of wealth is wealth of grace Earthly wealth e'en the basest has”

அருட்செல்வம் செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் பொருட்செல்வம்
பூரியார் கண்ணும் உள.

“Seek by sound ways good compassion; All faiths mark that for-salvation”

நல்லாற்றாள் நாடி அருளாள்க பல்லாற்றால்
தேரினும் அஃதே துணை.

“The hearts of mercy shall not go Into dark worlds of gruesome woe”

அருள்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சினார்க் கில்லை இருள்சேர்ந்த
இன்னா உலகம் புகல்.

“His soul is free from dread of sins Whose mercy serveth all beings”

மன்னுயிர் ஓம்பி அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லென்ப
தன்னுயிர் அஞ்சும் வினை.

“The wide wind-fed world witness bears: Men of mercy meet not sorrows”

அல்லல் அருளாள்வார்க்கு இல்லை வளிவழங்கும்
மல்லன்மா ஞாலங் கரி.

“Who grace forsake and graceless act The former loss and woes forget”

பொருள்நீங்கிப் பொச்சாந்தார் என்பர் அருள்நீங்கி
அல்லவை செய்தொழுகு வார்.

“This world is not for weathless ones That world is not for graceless swines”

அருளில்லார்க்கு அவ்வுலகம் இல்லை பொருளில்லார்க்கு
இவ்வுலகம் இல்லாகி யாங்கு.

“The wealthless may prosper one day; The graceless never bloom agay”

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பர் ஒருகால் அருளற்றார்
அற்றார்மற் றாதல் அரிது.

“Like Truth twisted by confused mind Wisdom is vain in hearts unkind”

தெருளாதான் மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டற்றால் தேரின்
அருளாதான் செய்யும் அறம்.

“Think how you feel before the strong When to the feeble you do wrong”

வலியார்முன் தன்னை நினைக்கதான் தன்னின்
மெலியார்மேல் செல்லு மிடத்து.

“The pure by faith mean pain to none Though princely wealth by that is won”

சிறப்பீனும் செல்வம் பெறினும் பிறர்க்குஇன்னா
செய்யாமை மாசற்றார் கோள்.

“The spotless hearts seek not revenge Though Malice does the worst in rage”

கறுத்துஇன்னா செய்தவக் கண்ணும் மறுத்தின்னா
செய்யாமை மாசற்றார் கோள்.

“Revenging even causeless hate Bad-blood breeds and baneful heat”

செய்யாமல் செற்றார்க்கும் இன்னாத செய்தபின்
உய்யா விழுமந் தரும்.

“Doing good-turns, put them to shame Thus chide the evil who do harm”

இன்னாசெய் தாரை ஒறுத்தல் அவர்நாண
நன்னயஞ் செய்து விடல்.

“What does a man from wisdom gain If he pines not at other's pain?”

அறிவினான் ஆகுவ துண்டோ பிறிதின்நோய்
தந்நோய்போல் போற்றாக் கடை.

“What you feel as pain to yourself Do it not to the other-self”

இன்னா எனத்தான் உணர்ந்தவை துன்னாமை
வேண்டும் பிறன்கண் செயல்.

“Any, anywhere injure not At any time even in thought”

எனைத்தானும் எஞ்ஞான்றும் யார்க்கும் மனத்தானாம்
மாணாசெய் யாமை தலை.

“How can he injure other souls Who in his life injury feels”

தன்னுயிர்ககு ஏன்னாமை தானறிவான் என்கொலோ
மன்னுயிர்க்கு இன்னா செயல்.

“Harm others in the forenoon Harm seeks thee in afternoon”

பிறர்க்கின்னா முற்பகல் செய்யின் தமக்குஇன்னா
பிற்பகல் தாமே வரும்.

“No harm is done by peace-lovers For pains rebound on pain-givers”

நோயெல்லாம் நோய்செய்தார் மேலவாம் நோய்செய்யார்
நோயின்மை வேண்டு பவர்.

“What is Virtue? 'Tis not to kill For killing causes every ill”

அறவினை யாதெனின் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பிறவினை எல்லாந் தரும்.

“Share the food and serve all lives This is the law of all the laws”

பகுத்துண்டு பல்லுயிர் ஓம்புதல் நூலோர்
தொகுத்தவற்றுள் எல்லாந் தலை.

“Not to kill is unique good The next, not to utter falsehood”

ஒன்றாக நல்லது கொல்லாமை மற்றதன்
பின்சாரப் பொய்யாமை நன்று.

“What way is good? That we can say The way away from heat to slay”

நல்லாறு எனப்படுவது யாதெனின் யாதொன்றும்
கொல்லாமை சூழும் நெறி.

“Of saints who renounce birth-fearing The head is he who dreads killing”

நிலைஅஞ்சி நீத்தாருள் எல்லாம் கொலைஅஞ்சிக்
கொல்லாமை சூழ்வான் தலை.

“Life-eating-Death shall spare the breath Of him who no life puts to death”

கொல்லாமை மேற்கொண் டொழுகுவான் வாழ்நாள்மேல்
செல்லாது உயிருண்ணுங் கூற்று.

“Kill not life that others cherish Even when your life must perish”

தன்னுயிர் நீப்பினும் செய்யற்க தான்பிறிது
இன்னுயிர் நீக்கும் வினை.

“The gain of slaughter is a vice Though deemed good in sacrifice”

நன்றாகும் ஆக்கம் பெரிதெனினும் சான்றோர்க்குக்
கொன்றாகும் ஆக்கங் கடை.

“Those who live by slaying are Eaters of carrion bizarre!”

கொலைவினைய ராகிய மாக்கள் புலைவினையர்
புன்மை தெரிவா ரகத்து.

“The loathsome poor sickly and sore Are killers stained by blood before”

உயிருடம்பின் நீக்கியா ரென்ப செயிருடம்பின்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்.
