“The words of Seers are lovely sweet Merciful and free from deceit”

இன்சொலால் ஈரம் அளைஇப் படிறுஇலவாம்
செம்பொருள் கண்டார்வாய்ச் சொல்.

“Sweet words from smiling lips dispense More joys than heart's beneficence”

அகன்அமர்ந்து ஈதலின் நன்றே முகனமர்ந்து
இன்சொலன் ஆகப் பெறின்.

“Calm face, sweet look, kind words from heart Such is the gracious virtue's part”

முகத்தான் அமர்ந்து இனிதுநோக்கி அகத்தானாம்
இன்சொ லினதே அறம்.

“Whose loving words delight each one The woe of want from them is gone”

துன்புறூஉம் துவ்வாமை இல்லாகும் யார்மாட்டும்
இன்புறூஉம் இன்சொ லவர்க்கு.

“To be humble and sweet words speak No other jewel do wise men seek”

பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவற்கு
அணியல்ல மற்றுப் பிற.

“His sins vanish, his virtues grow Whose fruitful words with sweetness flow”

அல்லவை தேய அறம்பெருகும் நல்லவை
நாடி இனிய சொலின்

“The fruitful courteous kindly words Lead to goodness and graceful deeds”

நயன்ஈன்று நன்றி பயக்கும் பயன்ஈன்று
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியாச் சொல்.

“Kind words free from meanness delight This life on earth and life the next”

சிறுமையுவு நீங்கிய இன்சொல் மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்பம் தரும்.

“Who sees the sweets of sweetness here To use harsh words how can he dare?”

இன்சொல் இனிதீன்றல் காண்பான் எவன்கொலோ
வன்சொல் வழங்கு வது?

“Leaving ripe fruits the raw he eats Who speaks harsh words when sweet word suits”

இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்
கனிஇருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று.

“Though a man from virtue strays, To keep from slander brings him praise”

அறங்கூறான் அல்ல செயினும் ஒருவன்
புறங்கூறான் என்றல் இனிது.

“Who bite behind, and before smile Are worse than open traitors vile”

அறனழீஇ அல்லவை செய்தலின் தீதே
புறனழீஇப் பொய்த்து நகை.

“Virtue thinks it better to die, Than live to backbite and to lie”

புறங்கூறிப் பொய்த்துயிர் வாழ்தலின் சாதல்
அறங்கூற்றும் ஆக்கத் தரும்.

“Though harsh you speak in one's presence Abuse is worse in his absence”

கண்ணின்று கண்ணறச் சொல்லினும் சொல்லற்க
முன்னின்று பின்நோக்காச் சொல்.

“Who turns to slander makes it plain His praise of virtue is in vain”

அறஞ்சொல்லும் நெஞ்சத்தான் அன்மை புறஞ்சொல்லும்
புன்மையாற் காணப் படும்.

“His failings will be found and shown, Who makes another's failings known”

பிறன்பழி கூறுவான் தன்பழி யுள்ளும்
திறன்தெரிந்து கூறப் படும்.

“By pleasing words who make not friends Sever their hearts by hostile trends”

பகச்சொல்லிக் கேளிர்ப் பிரிப்பர் நகச்சொல்லி
நட்பாடல் தேற்றா தவர்.

“What will they not to strangers do Who bring their friends' defects to view?”

துன்னியார் குற்றமும் தூற்றும் மரபினார்
என்னைகொல் ஏதிலார் மாட்டு.

“The world in mercy bears his load Who rants behind words untoward”

அறன்நோக்கி ஆற்றுங்கொல் வையம் புறன்நோக்கிப்
புன்சொல் உரைப்பான் பொறை.

“No harm would fall to any man If each his own defect could scan”

ஏதிலார் குற்றம்போல் தங்குற்றங் காண்கிற்பின்
தீதுண்டோ மன்னும் உயிர்க்கு.

“With silly words who insults all Is held in contempt as banal”

பல்லார் முனியப் பயனில சொல்லுவான்
எல்லாரும் எள்ளப் படும்.

“Vain talk before many is worse Than doing to friends deeds adverse”

பயனில பல்லார்முன் சொல்லல் நயனில
நட்டார்கண் செய்தலிற் றீது.

“The babbler's hasty lips proclaim That \"good-for-nothing\" is his name”

நயனிலன் என்பது சொல்லும் பயனில
பாரித் துரைக்கும் உரை.

“Vain words before an assembly Will make all gains and goodness flee”

நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும் பயன்சாராப்
பண்பில்சொல் பல்லா ரகத்து.

“Glory and grace will go away When savants silly nonsense say”

சீர்மை சிறப்பொடு நீங்கும் பயனில
நீர்மை யுடையார் சொலின்.

“Call him a human chaff who prides Himself in weightless idle words”

பயனில்சொல் பாராட்டு வானை மகன்எனல்
மக்கட் பதடி யெனல்.

“Let not men of worth vainly quack Even if they would roughly speak”

நயனில சொல்லினுஞ் சொல்லுக சான்றோர்
பயனில சொல்லாமை நன்று.

“The wise who weigh the worth refrain From words that have no grain and brain”

அரும்பயன் ஆயும் அறிவினார் சொல்லார்
பெரும்பயன் இல்லாத சொல்.

“The wise of spotless self-vision Slip not to silly words-mention”

பொருள்தீர்ந்த பொச்சாந்துஞ் சொல்லார் மருள்தீர்ந்த
மாசறு காட்சி யவர்.

“To purpose speak the fruitful word And never indulge in useless load”

சொல்லுக சொல்லிற் பயனுடைய சொல்லற்க
சொல்லிற் பயனிலாச் சொல்.

“Wealth of wealths is listening's wealth It is the best of wealths on earth”

செல்வத்துட் செல்வஞ் செவிச்செல்வம் அச்செல்வம்
செல்வத்து ளெல்லாந் தலை.

“Some food for the stomach is brought When the ear gets no food for thought”

செவுக்குண வில்லாத போழ்து சிறிது
வயிற்றுக்கும் ஈயப் படும்.

“Whose ears get lots of wisdom-food Equal gods on oblations fed”

செவியுணவிற் கேள்வி யுடையார் அவியுணவின்
ஆன்றாரோ டொப்பர் நிலத்து.

“Though not learned, hear and heed That serves a staff and stay in need”

கற்றில னாயினுங் கேட்க அஃதொருவற்கு
ஒற்கத்தின் ஊற்றாந் துணை.

“Virtuous men's wisdom is found A strong staff on slippery ground”

இழுக்கல் உடையுழி ஊற்றுக்கோல் அற்றே
ஒழுக்க முடையார்வாய்ச் சொல்.

“Lend ear to good words however few That much will highly exalt you”

எனைத்தானும் நல்லவை கேட்க அனைத்தானும்
ஆன்ற பெருமை தரும்.

“Who listen well and learn sharply Not ev'n by slip speak foolishly”

பிழைத்துணர்ந்தும் பேதைமை சொல்லா ரிழைத்துணர்ந்
தீண்டிய கேள்வி யவர்.

“That ear though hearing is dulled Which is not by wisdom drilled”

கேட்பினுங் கேளாத் தகையவே கேள்வியால்
தோட்கப் படாத செவி.

“A modest mouth is hard for those Who care little to counsels wise”

நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
வாயின ராதல் அரிது.

“Who taste by mouth and not by ear What if they fare ill or well here?”

செவியிற் சுவையுணரா வாயுணர்வின் மாக்கள்
அவியினும் வாழினும் என்?

“The goodness called goodness of speech Is goodness which nothing can reach”

நாநலம் என்னும் நலனுடைமை அந்நலம்
யாநலத்து உள்ளதூஉம் அன்று.

“Since gain or ruin speeches bring Guard against the slips of tongue”

ஆக்கமுங் கேடும் அதனால் வருதலால்
காத்தோம்பல் சொல்லின்கட் சோர்வு.

“A speech is speech that holds ears And attracts ev'n those that are averse”

கேட்டார்ப் பிணிக்கும் தகையவாய்க் கேளாரும்
வேட்ப மொழிவதாம் சொல்.

“Weigh thy words and speak; because No wealth or virtue words surpass”

திறனறிந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லை அறனும்
பொருளும் அதனினூஉங்கு இல்.

“Speak out thy world so that no word Can win it and say untoward”

சொல்லுக சொல்லைப் பிறிதோர்சொல் அச்சொல்லை
வெல்லுஞ்சொல் இன்மை அறிந்து.

“Spotless men speak what is sweet And grasp in others what is meet”

வேட்பத்தாஞ் சொல்லிப் பிறர்சொல் பயன்கோடல்
மாட்சியின் மாசற்றார் கோள்.

“No foe defies the speaker clear Flawless, puissant, and free from fear”

சொலல்வல்லன் சோர்விலன் அஞ்சான் அவனை
இகல்வெல்லல் யார்க்கும் அரிது.

“The world will quickly carry out The words of counsellors astute”

விரைந்து தொழில்கேட்கும் ஞாலம் நிரந்தினிது
சொல்லுதல் வல்லார்ப் பெறின்.

“They overspeak who do not seek A few and flawless words to speak”

பலசொல்லக் காமுறுவர் மன்றமா சற்ற
சிலசொல்லல் தேற்றா தவர்.

“Who can't express what they have learnt Are bunch of flowers not fragrant”

இணருழ்த்தும் நாறா மலரனையர் கற்றது
உணர விரித்துரையா தார்.
