After the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam came to power (May 10, 2026), the first session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly began today (June 18) with the Governor’s address.
At the swearing-in ceremony of the cabinet, including the Chief Minister, the Tamil Thai Vazhthu was pushed to third place and the tradition-breaking move of giving first place to the Vande Mataram song was strongly criticized.
Taking this into account, the Tamil Thai Vazhthu song was given its customary first place in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The Communist Party of India welcomes the restoration of legislative tradition.
In the Legislative Assembly election, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has once again been assured through the Governor’s address that the promises made in its election manifesto will be fulfilled.
The Governor’s address has criticized the announcement that Tamil Nadu’s long-standing bilingual policy of Tamil and English will continue to be firmly pursued, as well as the Union government’s attempt to force the implementation of the three-language policy by imposing Hindi, and said that it is not right to withhold the Rs. 3,458 crore that the Central government should provide to Tamil Nadu’s education department on this basis.
The Governor’s address has stated that it is showing interest in expanding archaeological research on the ancient civilization of the Tamils.
The Governor’s address reflects the effort to prevent revenue leakages, increase revenue, and provide corruption-free governance, based on the Finance Department white paper released the day before yesterday.
A Governor’s address with a positive, constructive approach is welcome.
However, while the Governor’s address promises that a new industrial policy will be announced and that trade and business will be simplified, it is deeply disappointing that there is not even a single word in the address about the expectations of working people, including labour welfare, legal rights, a living wage, and pensions, and that the Governor’s address remains silent on the Union government’s four anti-worker labour codes.
The Governor’s address did not focus on the demand that the Tamil Nadu government should not accept the BJP’s Jigram G scheme, which would take away the legal right to employment that rural manual workers, including agricultural laborers, have been receiving for the past 20 years, and that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should continue to be implemented. This has disappointed the expectations of the working people in rural areas.
Contrary to the promise that crop loans of small and marginal farmers with land up to five acres would be fully waived, the loan waiver of up to Rs. 75,000 based on the loan amount will not provide full relief to farmers; keeping this in mind, it should be reconsidered and the election-time promise should be fulfilled.
He said that the Governor's address, which shows concern for fulfilling election promises, should also reflect the sentiments of the working people, including farmers, agricultural laborers, organized-sector workers, contract workers, and others.
