UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres traveled to Haiti to assess the situation on the ground in the country, which has been affected by the increasing violence of armed groups.
Due to this violence, about 2,300 people have been killed this year alone; 100 people have been kidnapped; and 1.5 million people have been displaced.
After more than 30 people were affected in recent clashes in one of the country’s slum areas, Guterres visited a temporary camp there and met and spoke with the affected people.
He then went to the headquarters of the new UN joint peacekeeping force for violence control and inspected its readiness. He also discussed with the interim prime minister about restoring peace in the country and holding elections soon.
