Washington, June 17: The word “Indo” has been removed from the name of the U.S. military’s Indo-Pacific Command, which has now been renamed the U.S. Pacific Command.
The vast geographic and strategic region encompassing the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean is called the Indo-Pacific region.
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command has been responsible for security operations across this entire region.
Considering the increased linkage between the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean regions, during U.S. President Trump’s first term in 2018, this military command was named the Indo-Pacific Command. In this situation, the word “Indo” has now been removed from the name of that military command.
In a statement released by the U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday, it said, ‘This division, created in 1947 by then U.S. President Harry S. Truman, has played a major role in shaping regional security after World War II and in coordinating the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and countless humanitarian operations.
In recognition of the historical significance of such a division, the old name, which carries a long military tradition, has been restored to the unit,’ it said.
At the same time, it has been clarified that this current name change does not alter the operational scope of this force.
“This force will continue to monitor the vast expanse of sea from the west coast of the United States to India’s western border. Its fundamental objective and operations—to work with regional friendly nations to ensure a free and unobstructed sea route—will also continue unchanged,” the Defence Ministry has explained.
