There have already been allegations that the Public Service Commission is delaying the release of examination results and the issuance of appointment orders to those who are eligible. At the same time, it has caused shock that in Kerala, a recommendation letter for appointment to an exam written at a young age arrived about 21 years later, when he had reached retirement age.
Abdul Majeed is from the Kalikavu area in Malappuram district of Kerala state. In 2005, he took the examination for the post of part-time junior Arabic language teacher under Category No. 229/2005. He was 39 years old when he wrote the exam. The eligibility list for this examination was prepared, and its three-year validity period had already expired in 2008.
Generally, appointments are not made from an expired list, so he too gave up hope of getting a job. According to Kerala government rules, the maximum validity period of a temporary notification is only 3 months. Even if this notification is issued 3 times in the absence of applicants, the entire process must be completed within one year. But the PSC took 8 years to fill this one vacancy.
Finally, on 11.01.2022, this was reported to the Thrissur PSC office as a 'non-joining vacancy'. A letter should have been sent to Abdul Majeed immediately from there. However, the Thrissur office took another 4 years to convey this information to Majeed. Finally, on April 24 this year (24.04.2026), an advice memo was sent from the PSC, and Majeed received it on 26.04.2026.
According to Abdul Majeed’s SSLC certificate, his date of birth is 27.05.1966. Therefore, within one month after he received the appointment order, he completed 60 years of age and, as per government rules, had reached the age of retirement. As a result, he was unable to join duty.
However, Majid says that his date of birth has been incorrectly recorded in his school certificate and that his actual year of birth is 1967. He says that if this error is corrected, he will be able to work as a teacher in a government school for at least one year, and has submitted a petition to the State Education Minister and local MLA Shamsudeen, requesting that justice be granted to him on humanitarian grounds.
Speaking about this, Abdul Majeed said, "When the postman came on April 24 and handed me the appointment letter, I could not believe my own eyes. It was the PSC advice memo I had eagerly awaited 21 years ago, in my youth. But a few minutes later, when my age came back to mind, all I felt was deep disappointment and tears.
When I wrote this exam in 2005, I was 39 years old. The energy I had then, and the hope that if I got a government job I could support my family, cannot be put into words. When I learned in 2008 that the validity of that rank list had ended, I gave up that dream completely.
Then why has this Arabic language teacher post remained unfilled for the past 18 years? If there were no qualified candidates, why was no fresh notification issued? Keeping this post hidden all this time and now sending me this order after I have turned 60 shows the worst administrative negligence by the PSC. This is an act of playing with the life of a poor candidate like me.
I lost my youth believing that I would get a permanent government job. Since I couldn’t get a job, I have struggled immensely for the past 21 years to support my family. By teaching Arabic part-time and doing temporary wage labor, I somehow managed to educate my children and run the household by doing whatever work I could find.
If I had gotten this job 15 years earlier, my family’s financial situation would have changed. I could have given my children a better future. My date of birth has been incorrectly recorded as May 27, 1966 in my SSLC certificate. But my actual year of birth is 1967. I should not be punished at this old age for a mistake made by the PSC.
Therefore, on humanitarian grounds, I have personally gone and submitted a petition to the Education Minister and to MLA N. Shamsudeen, requesting that my age record be corrected and that I be given an opportunity to work as a teacher in a government school for at least one year. I am waiting with the final hope that they will surely grant me justice," he said.
