Tamil Nadu Governor R.V. Arlekar has praised the Maruthu Pandiyars as brave warriors who waged an armed struggle to drive out the British occupiers and fought a great war, placing land and honor above all else.
On June 16, 1801, the freedom fighters Maruthu Pandiyars issued a proclamation in Tiruchi called the "Jambudweepa Proclamation." Known as the "First Proclamation of the Indian War of Independence," it stirred the people, paved the way for the struggle, and served as a weapon to drive out the British.
In this context, remembering this day (June 16), when the Jambudweepa Proclamation was issued, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has posted about the Maruthu Pandiyars and their proclamation.
On the Governor’s House X page,
"Fifty years before the First War of Independence, the Maruthu Pandiyars were great warriors who waged an armed struggle to drive out the British invaders who came as subordinates to the Nawabs of Arcot and tried to seize power, and who fought a great war declaring that land and honor were paramount!
Because the lower part of Bharat resembles the fruit of the jamun, the land of Bharat, which was called Jambudvipa in the Vedas and Puranas and Navalandeevu in Sangam literature, and to protect it, even though there are many divisions by language, occupation, and race, the "Jambudvipa Proclamation" issued by the Maruthu Pandiyars in Trichy with the vision that the whole of Bharat is one nation is the clarion call of a Kshatriya! A milestone in the history of Bharat's freedom! A proclamation forged by pouring out the passion for liberation as emotion will stir even the cowardly to rise in fury!
Our people, serving as slaves in the British army, call for leaving there and, at the mere sight of a white man, cutting him down; this later laid the foundation for armed struggle!
They also point out what sin those who do not do this are committing, and conclude the proclamation by saying, "The Maruthu Pandiyars will never forgive the vile European creatures."
Realizing that even an army of many thousands of soldiers could not make the Maruthu brothers kneel, the deceitful British announced that they would blow apart Kalaiyar Kovil with cannons, and the Maruthu brothers gave their heads to protect dharma!
The Jambudvipa Declaration was the very first open challenge issued to the Portuguese by Bharatham! It is stated that everyone must remember the Jambudvipa Declaration so that Bharatham may stand self-reliant forever!!"

ஆங்கிலேய ஆக்கிரமிப்பாளர்களை அகற்றி விரட்ட ஆயுதப்போர் புரிந்து, மண்ணும் மானமும் பெரிதென்று மாபெரும் போர் செய்த மாவீரர்கள் மருதுபாண்டியர்கள் என தமிழக ஆளுநர் ஆர்.வி. ஆர்லேகர் புகழாரம் சூட்டியுள்ளார்.
1801 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் 16ல் சுதந்திர போராட்ட வீரர்களான மருதுபாண்டியர்கள் திருச்சியில் “ஜம்புத்தீவு பிரகடனம்” என்ற அறிக்கையை வெளியிட்டனர். ‘முதல் இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போர் பிரகடனம்’ எனப்படும் இது, மக்களிடையே எழுச்சியை உருவாக்கி போராட்டத்திற்கு வழிவகுத்து வெள்ளையர்களை வெளியேற்றும் ஓர் ஆயுதமாக இருந்தது.
இந்நிலையில் ஜம்புத்தீவு பிரகடனம் வெளியிட்ட இந்த நாளை (ஜூன் 16) நினைவுகூர்ந்து தமிழ்நாடு ஆளுநர் ராஜேந்திர விஸ்வநாத் ஆர்லேகர் மருது பாண்டியர்கள் பற்றியும் அவர்களது பிரகடனம் பற்றியும் பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.
ஆளுநர் மாளிகை எக்ஸ் பக்கத்தில்,
“முதல் சுதந்திரப் போருக்கு ஐம்பது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே, ஆற்காடு நவாப்களுக்கு அடியாள்களாக வந்து அதிகாரத்தைப் பறிக்க முயன்ற ஆங்கிலேய ஆக்கிரமிப்பாளர்களை அகற்றி விரட்ட ஆயுதப்போர் புரிந்து, மண்ணும் மானமும் பெரிதென்று மாபெரும் போர் செய்த மாவீரர்கள் மருதுபாண்டியர்கள்!
பாரதத்தின் கீழ் பகுதி நாவல் பழத்தை ஒத்திருப்பதால் வேதங்களிலும் புராணங்களிலும் ஜம்புத்தீவு என்றும் சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் நாவலந்தீவு என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்ட பாரத தேசத்தை காப்பதற்கும், மொழியாலும், தொழிலாலும், இனத்தாலும் பிரிவுகள் பல இருந்தாலும் பாரதம் முழுவதும் ஒரே நாடு என்ற நோக்கில் மருதுபாண்டியர்கள் திருச்சியில் வெளியிட்ட “ஜம்புத்தீவு பிரகடனம்” என்பது க்ஷத்திரியனின் சங்க நாதம்! பாரத விடுதலை வரலாற்றில் ஒரு மைல்கல்! விடுதலை வேட்கையை உணர்ச்சிகளாய் கொட்டி உருவாக்கிய அறிக்கை கோழையினையும் கொதித்தெழச் செய்யும்!
ஆங்கிலேயப் படையில் அடிமைச் சேவகம் செய்யும் நம்மவர்கள், அங்கிருந்து வெளியேறி வெள்ளையரைக் கண்ட மாத்திரத்தில் வெட்டி வீழ்த்த வேண்டுகோள் வைக்கிறார்கள், இதுவே பின்னாளில் ஆயுத போராட்டத்திற்கு அடிகோலிற்று!
இதைச் செய்யாதவர்கள் என்ன பாவம் செய்தவர்கள் ஆகிறார்கள் என்பதையும் அவர்கள் குறிப்பிட்டு “ஐரோப்பிய இழி பிறவிகளை ஒருபோதும் மன்னிக்காத மருதுபாண்டியர்கள்” என்று பிரகடனத்தை நிறைவு செய்கிறார்கள்.
பல்லாயிரம் வீரர் கொண்ட படையாலும் மருது சகோதரர்களை மண்டியிட வைக்க முடியாது என்பதை உணர்ந்த ஆங்கிலேயே நயவஞ்சகர்கள், காளையார் கோவிலை பீரங்கியால் பிளப்போம் என அறிவிக்க, தர்மம் காக்க தலை கொடுத்தனர் மருது சகோதரர்கள்!
ஜம்புத்தீவு பிரகடனம் தான் முதன்முதலில் பரங்கியருக்கு பாரதம்விட்ட பகிரங்க சவால்! பாரதம் சுயசார்புடன் என்றும் நிற்க எல்லோரும் நினைவிற் கொள்ள வேண்டியது ஜம்புத்தீவு பிரகடனம்!!” என்று குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
