Adhiyaman was the TVK candidate who contested in the Omalur Assembly constituency in Salem district. He had lost to AIADMK candidate Mani by a margin of 14,539 votes. He has been busy thanking the people who trusted and voted for him, as well as the party functionaries who worked hard.
Unable to accept the defeat, Adhiyaman has been speaking about it and listing certain issues he says were the reasons for his loss, discussing them with party functionaries. One of the main points he has been making is that “MLA Lakshmanan, who contested and won as the TVK candidate in the Salem West constituency, gave Rs. 2,000 in cash per vote, which caused setbacks in other constituencies and led to my defeat.”
Speaking at a meeting held in Thevattipatti under the Omalur Assembly constituency to thank party functionaries, Athiyaman said, "In the Salem West constituency, which is adjacent to the Omalur constituency, our candidate Lakshmanan won by giving Rs. 2,000 per vote. But in the neighboring constituency, we did not give anything. Because of this, people became dissatisfied with us. All the campaigning we carried out over months to reach the people was wasted by the money he gave. We lost 6,000 to 10,000 votes. That is the reason for the defeat," he said, setting off a controversy.
This matter is spreading like wildfire on social media.
While Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has been saying that he came to power by abolishing the practice of paying money for votes, the fact that the very candidate from his party has said that Laxman won the Salem West constituency by giving Rs. 2,000 per vote has caused a storm.
A TVK functionary who spoke to us about this background said, "What Adhiyaman said is true. Laxmanan was Veerapandian's right-hand man and was arrested by Jayalalithaa. From the time he was an inspector until now, he has not had a particularly good reputation among the people. He asked for a seat in the AIADMK. But he did not get the constituency he wanted. Immediately, he joined our party and contested from the Salem West constituency. Even in other parties, only 50 or 60 percent of the voters were given money. But he had arranged the distribution on the basis of 100 percent of voters, making sure not a single vote was missed.
His distribution of money for votes in the Salem West constituency caused a stir in the surrounding constituencies. While Adhiyamaan had been under the impression that money had come from the leadership only for Laxmanan, a warning then came from the leadership to Laxmanan saying, “Do not give money for votes.”
Even after that, the distribution took place. Despite working hard, Adhiyamaan could not win. Since power, authority, and ministerial office have come over to the TVK side, he has been speaking unable to accept his defeat.
“The leadership has reprimanded Athiyaman, telling him not to speak in a way that creates controversy within the party. Lakshmanan, who is upset that he did not get a ministerial post, is extremely angry with Athiyaman over this remark,” he said.
Explaining this, Adhiyaman said, "This is a part of what I spoke at the party’s internal consultation meeting held on May 31. My speech was deliberately edited and circulated on social media. I did not publicly accuse any specific candidate or member. I only pointed out that the influence of money given by people from another party in the neighboring constituency of Salem West was also reflected in the Omalur constituency, and that was the reason for my defeat."
Speaking to us on behalf of Adhiyaman, his friend Mani said, "He spoke out of some other frustration and distress. But they twisted it and brought it out like this. TVK people are always waiting to see what he will say and how they can trap him in some issue. Whatever words are spoken, they end up being taken the wrong way. It is frightening," he said.
When reporters raised questions about this allegation, he got into a car and left without saying anything, and it also became controversial that Lakshmanan’s assistants pushed the reporters.
