The faction of dissident MPs from the party is set to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday, seeking recognition as the “real Trinamool Congress.”
Dissident MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said on Friday that 19 MPs have joined their faction so far.
After the BJP won the West Bengal Assembly election with a massive majority of more than two-thirds (207 seats) and took power, the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee secured only 80 seats. This defeat has left the Trinamool Congress shaken. The party has split over opposition to Mamata’s leadership.
58 dissatisfied MLAs of the party recently broke away as a separate group. Similarly, out of the 29 Lok Sabha MPs of the Trinamool Congress, 19 dissatisfied MPs split off separately and expressed their support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
In this situation, Jagadishchandra Barma Basunia, one of the dissatisfied MPs, said in an interview to PTI news agency on Friday:
With the aim of forming the real Trinamool Congress group, signatures were collected from party MPs starting June 8. A letter signed by 19 MPs has already been submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
We will meet the Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Monday, seeking recognition of us as the true Trinamool Congress.
Senior leader Kalyan Banerjee’s allegation against Abhishek Banerjee (Mamata’s nephew and Trinamool national general secretary) that he is acting arrogantly without respecting the experienced leaders in the party is absolutely correct. We support his view, he said.
Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MPs are also leaving the party. So far, 3 MPs have resigned.
Summons again: Dissident MLAs had alleged that their signatures were forged in the letter submitted by the Trinamool Congress leadership to the Speaker for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
In the case related to this, CID police had already questioned the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Citing that the answers he gave then were not satisfactory, he has been summoned to appear for questioning again on June 14.
