The Delhi court has refused to grant bail to a person accused of cheating a judicial officer from Haryana and defrauding him of more than Rs. 52 lakh.
Additional Sessions Judge Saurav Pratap Singh Laler, who heard the case, noted that the incident has all the elements of an online scam carried out through a romantic relationship, and that the accused is concealing crucial evidence.
The court heard the bail petition filed by Deepak Watts, who was arrested on the basis of the electronic First Information Report registered by the Delhi Police Special Cell. It was stated that a case had been registered under sections including fraud, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy.
The accused created a fake identity on the ‘Tinder’ app under the name ‘Abhimanyu Vashisht’ and, claiming to be an officer working in a secret government department, became acquainted with the victim. He persuaded the victim by promising high returns and pressured them to transfer Rs. 52.81 lakh. The court also noted that the WhatsApp conversations submitted by the accused not only revealed a romantic relationship but also showed the associated money transfers.
However, the court also expressed concern that there were shortcomings in the investigation process. It was pointed out that key electronic evidence, including Tinder records, complete WhatsApp conversations, and telephone call records, had still not been collected.
In this regard, the order issued on June 9 stated: The investigation is still at a very early stage. Investigations need to be carried out on several important aspects. In particular, the identity and role of the entities through which the money was transferred have not been clarified. In such a situation, releasing the accused could affect the investigation.
The victim is a judicial officer currently in service. If the accused is released, there is a risk that he may directly or indirectly approach and pressure her. In particular, the possibility of using personal information cannot be ruled out. Therefore, the court stated that the accused’s bail petition is being dismissed.
Further, the investigating officer must obtain Harshali Chaudhary’s complete Tinder and WhatsApp records. The court has ordered that the meetings between the two be verified, the deposit of Rs. 5 lakh be investigated, and the intermediary entities through which the money was transferred be examined.
