In the Puducherry 2026 Legislative Assembly election, the NR Congress, which contested on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance, contested 16 constituencies and won 12 of them. Among the four constituencies it lost, Kadhirkamam was one.
In that constituency, considered Chief Minister Rangasamy’s constituency, K.S.P. Ramesh, who contested on behalf of the NR Congress, suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of independent candidate Alagu (alias) Alaganandam.
The defeat of the candidate from his party in Kadhirkamam constituency, which was considered one of Chief Minister Rangasamy’s strongholds, became a topic of debate in Puducherry politics. The opposition parties criticized, saying, `Chief Minister Rangasamy’s influence has declined even in his own constituency.'
At this point, an audio clip has surfaced in which the party’s general secretary N.S.J. Jayapal says, “I was the one who defeated K.S.P. Ramesh, who contested on behalf of the N.R. Congress.”
In that audio, in which he is speaking with an N.R. Congress functionary, he says, “For the past 5 years, the MLA (K.S.P. Ramesh) did not respect us. I asked for a seat for Azhagu (Azhagu (a) Azhaganandam).
I said I would support him until the end, but then I don’t know whose advice he listened to (Chief Minister Rangasamy). He gave the ticket to Ramesh. Right then I told him, “Ramesh will not win. I will not work,” and said so.
As far as he was concerned (Chief Minister Rangasamy), he thought that if I, the CM… the party leader… told everyone to vote for the jack symbol, everyone would vote. But we are locals. I was born and raised right here.
I gave way last time for Ramesh to become an MLA. But it was wrong to say that I should not be invited to any event and that my photograph should not be put up.
"Whoever it is, they should be respected; if they are not respected, this is what happens," he says. To that, the person speaking from the other side says, "My concern is whether no one is doing any work for the N.R. Congress party."
Responding to that, N.S.J. Jayapal said, “I’ll tell you now, listen. I was the one who called everyone. I called every association. I was the one who defeated him (K.S.P. Ramesh). Do you know how many crores I have spent in politics and come here? I am 64 years old.
I was the one who brought Ramesh into politics. I don’t know how you can accept him. He doesn’t know how to respect anyone. In this election, I worked against Ramesh.”
I am not hiding anything. The Chief Minister himself said, “Jayapal must have done it.” I was born and raised locally. How many people do you think I know? I have been an MLA twice, a mayor once, and a chairman once. Now I am the party’s general secretary. That is enough for me.
I have bought land and kept it. After two or three years, I am going to build a wedding hall there. The Chief Minister himself told Ramesh, “Jayapal says that you do not respect anyone.”
I won by a margin of 4,000 votes when K.S.P. Ramesh contested against me as an independent. In this election, I was the only one in the constituency who supported Azhagu. When confusion arose between Ramesh and Azhagu, the Chief Minister asked me, “Are you contesting?”
But I said I could not. Do you have more loyalty to the N.R. Congress party and to N.R. than I do? I made phone calls and spoke to everyone. It was the group of my friends that worked to ensure Ramesh’s defeat.
I thought I would resign from the post of general secretary, get Azhagai elected, and then bring him along. Why didn’t he (K.S.P. Ramesh) listen to what someone who worked for the party said? Isn’t that wrong? Even if you have money and a position, if you don’t respect anyone, who will come looking for you?
If N.R. (Chief Minister Rangasamy) does not respect us, how are we supposed to go? Are we people without self-respect? All the MLAs are my own relatives. I brought everyone into the party, including Thadi Bhaskar, Senthil, Thanavelu, and T.P.R. Selvam.
“Ramesh’s story is over. Don’t talk about it. Don’t tell anyone what was spoken to you,” says N.S.J. Jayapal.
