North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has always shocked the world with his military might, has now been shown to the world from a completely different, heartwarming angle by the country’s women’s football team.
In the final of the AFC Women’s Champions League, North Korea’s Naegohyang Women’s FC defeated Japan’s Tokyo Verdy Beleza 1-0 to win the championship title.
A video of Kim Jong Un meeting and congratulating these players in person after they became the first North Korean club to win this trophy is now going viral on the internet.
At a special commendation ceremony held in Pyongyang, members of the Champions League-winning Naegohyang team were joined by North Korea’s young national women’s team, which recently won the 2026 AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup. Kim Jong Un, who praised them with a broad smile, expressed his delight by shaking hands with them.
After winning this final held in South Korea, the NekoHyang players celebrated by running around the field carrying North Korea’s national flag. Although North Korea’s flag is considered prohibited there under South Korea’s National Security Act, about 1,200 South Korean fans in the stadium stood up, applauded, and cheered.
