Near Omalur Bus Stand in Salem district, a newly constructed vegetable market valued at around 6.5 million rupees was inaugurated on 22.02.2025 by the Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration and Tourism Minister. However, until now, it has not been put to use as intended and has instead been completely converted into a full-time liquor shop for alcohol enthusiasts, causing concern. Upon receiving this information, we went there directly to investigate. Although basic facilities like electricity, water, and restrooms were available, it was somewhat surprising that vegetable vendors had not set up their shops inside the market. This is because, apart from the building being new, vegetable shops were already operating there previously. Therefore,Opening shops there after the construction work is completed will not affect the business in any way. Since it is already a familiar place for the general public, it is clear that there is some other issue there. We inquired about this from the shopkeepers near the new vegetable market. Those who spoke to us said, "We have been running shops here for generations. But now, the newly constructed market has been leased to some new person. That individual is demanding a high rent. We are unable to manage it, so..."They said, 'We are running our lives by setting up shops on the street here.' What is the people's demand? The majority of the vegetable vendors there demand that the government set a lower and fair rent for the wholesale shops, giving them some priority! 'Shops provide protection from rain and sun only to those who have money. If this new building had not been constructed, we would have remained in our wholesale shops,' says another vendor with a heavy heart. While most are doing business by setting up shops outside on the street, the dominance of liquor sellers is prominently seen in the market built for business."Anti-social elements camping with liquor bottles inside the market cause major disturbances in crowded areas. Therefore, the government should take steps to allocate shops on a fair rental basis, giving priority to regular vegetable vendors, after consulting with the auction contractors. This is the demand of the vegetable sellers. When inquired at the Omalur Special Grade Municipality office regarding this, they said, "The vegetable market was given on auction. The traders' request has come to our attention. Appropriate action will be taken. Both parties will be consulted to find an amicable solution in this matter."

இது குறித்து தகவல் நமக்கு கிடைத்தவுடன், நேரடியாகச் சென்று விசாரித்தோம். மின்சாரம் வசதி, தண்ணீர் வசதி மற்றும் கழிவறை வசதி என அடிப்படை வசதிகள் இருந்தபோதும், ஏன் காய்கறிக் கடைக்காரர்கள் சந்தைக்குள் கடைகள் அமைக்கவில்லை என்பது சற்றே வியப்பாக இருந்தது.
ஏனென்றால்… கட்டடம்தான் புதியதே தவிர, ஏற்கெனவே அங்குதான் காய்கறிக்கடைகள் இயங்கி வந்தன. அதனால், கட்டடப் பணிகள் முடிந்த பிறகு அங்கு கடைகளைத் திறப்பது வியாபாரத்தை எந்த விதத்திலும் பாதிக்காது. பொது மக்களுக்கும் அது ஏற்கெனவே பழக்கப்பட்ட இடம் என்பதால், அங்கு வேறு ஏதோ பிரச்னை உள்ளது என்பது தெளிவானது.
இது குறித்து புதிய காய்கறிச் சந்தைக்கு அருகில் கடைப்போட்டுள்ள வியாபாரிகளிடம் விசாரித்தோம். நம்மிடம் பேசியவர்கள், “தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாய் இங்குதான் கடைப்போட்டு வியாபாரம் செய்து வருகிறோம். ஆனால் தற்போது இங்கு கட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும் சந்தையை ஏதோ ஒரு புதிய நபருக்கு ஏலத்தில் விட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அந்த தனி நபர் அதிக வாடகை கேட்கிறார். எங்களால் சமாளிக்க முடியாது என்பதால், இங்கு சாலையில் கடைப்போட்டு எங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை ஓட்டி வருகிறோம்” என்றனர்.
மக்கள் கோரிக்கை என்ன?
அங்குள்ள பெரும்பான்மையான காய்கறிக் கடைக்காரர்களின் கோரிக்கை அரசு மாமூல் கடைக்காரர்களுக்கு சற்று முன்னுரிமை அடிப்படையில், குறைந்த மற்றும் நியாயமான வாடகையை நிர்ணயம் செய்து தர வேண்டும் என்பதே!
“பணம் படைத்தவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே கடைகள் மழை, வெயிலில் இருந்து பாதுகாப்பு அளிக்கிறது. இதற்கு மாற்றாக இந்தப் புதுக் கட்டடம் கட்டாமலே இருந்திருந்தால், நாங்கள் எங்கள் மாமூல் கடைகளிலே இருந்திருப்போம்” என்று மனம் நோகிறார், மற்றொரு கடைக்காரர்.
பெரும்பாலானோர் வெளியே சாலையில் கடைகள் போட்டு வியாபாரம் செய்து வரும் நிலையில், வியாபாரம் செய்வதற்காக கட்டப்பட்ட சந்தையில் மதுபிரியர்களின் ஆதிக்கம் தலைதூக்கிக் காணப்படுகிறது. சந்தைக்குள் மது பாட்டில்களுடன் முகாமிடும் சமூகவிரோதிகள், மக்கள் அதிகம் புழங்கும் இடத்தில் பெரும் இடையூறுகளை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றனராம்.
எனவே அரசு, ஏல ஒப்பந்ததாரரோடு பேசி, ஒரு நியாயமான வாடகை அடிப்படையிலும்… மாமூல் கடைக்காரர்களுக்கு முன்னுரிமை அடிப்படையிலும் கடைகள் வழங்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே காய்கறிக் கடைக்காரர்களின் கோரிக்கையாக உள்ளது.
இது குறித்து ஓமலூர் சிறப்பு நிலை பேரூராட்சி அலுவலகத்தை அணுகி விசாரித்தபோது, “காய்கறிச் சந்தை ஏலத்தில் விடப்பட்டது. வியாபாரிகளின் கோரிக்கை எங்கள் கவனத்துக்கு வந்திருக்கிறது. அதன் மீது உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும். இந்த விவகாரத்தில் இருதரப்பினரிடமும் பேசி, சுமுக தீர்வு காணப்படும்” என்றனர்.
