With the aim of improving plastic waste management, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Friday launched a new initiative to strengthen science-based collection and recycling efforts in the Lutyens’ Delhi areas.
The project, called ‘Project DROP,’ has been launched in collaboration with Kia India and the Central Pollution Control Board.
At the launch event of the project, NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal introduced community dustbins made from recycled plastic waste and also flagged off a special vehicle for the systematic collection and transportation of plastic waste.
Speaking on the occasion, he said: This initiative is aligned with national policies such as Swachh Bharat, Mission LiFE, and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’. It aims to promote the responsible handling of plastic waste and increase public participation in environmental protection.
Since the NDMC administrative area houses important institutions such as Parliament, central government offices, embassies, and others, cleanliness and environmental initiatives in this area are of national and international importance.
Since 2021, NDMC has been engaged in solid waste management activities in collaboration with the Central Pollution Control Board. Under this partnership, 115 “Aerobin” systems have been installed so far, more than 62,900 kilograms of wet waste have been processed, and over 10,000 kilograms of compost have been produced.
He said that the ‘Project DROP’ initiative, introduced as part of this collaboration, will ensure the installation of separate plastic collection bins and the proper handling of the collected waste through approved recycling systems.
NDMC Council member Anil Valmiki said, ‘Plastic waste poses a serious challenge to the environment and human health. Public active participation is essential for this project to succeed.’ He also urged resident welfare associations, trader associations, and voluntary organizations to cooperate in properly segregating and disposing of plastic waste.
Kia India’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Atul Sood, said, “This initiative fundamentally aims to strengthen the plastic waste management framework and promote responsible waste-handling habits,” he said.
Ajay Garg, Secretary of the Central Pollution Control Board of India, emphasized that coordinated action is essential to tackle plastic pollution. The organization’s Deputy Director, Radha Goyal, explained the project’s implementation framework and the possibilities for expanding it to other cities as well.
Residents' welfare associations, traders' associations, and NDMC officials, among others, participated in this inaugural event. This project, which has the potential to serve as a model for plastic waste management, is also seen as an effort to increase public participation in environmental protection in cities.
