Amid a shortage of chemotherapy drugs for cancer patients, the Tamil Nadu government has formed an expert committee to study alternative treatments.
For those suffering from breast cancer, colon cancer, and gastrointestinal cancers, combination drugs are administered through intravenous chemotherapy treatment.
That combination drug therapy includes one of the drugs cisplatin, carboplatin, or oxaliplatin, which are based on platinum as the core compound.
Due to the war situation, the import of raw materials for this type of medicine has been affected. As a result, its price has increased fivefold, and the stock of the medicine has decreased, causing a shortage. Following this, a committee headed by Dr. Sugandhi Rajakumari, Director of Medical Education and Research, has been formed to study treatment using alternative medicines.
Regarding this, officials from the Public Health Department said: Continuous review meetings are being held regarding the shortage of chemotherapy medicines. In the current situation, there is stock of Cisplatin sufficient for one and a half months. Carboplatin is available for up to 20 days.
The National Health Mission has provided Rs. 11 crore to the Directorate of Medical Education for the purchase of cancer medicines. An amount of Rs. 399.16 crore has been allocated for the purchase of other medicines.
Efforts are also under way to procure platinum-based medicines at higher prices if they are available in local and international markets.
At the same time, an expert committee headed by the Director of Medical Education and Research has been formed to study what alternative medicines can be provided to patients. It includes the directors of the oncology departments of Chennai Medical College, Stanley Medical College, and Kilpauk Medical College. They will study the alternative medicines and submit a report to the government. Based on that, guidelines for new treatment methods will be issued, they said.
