Preserving Tamil Manuscripts: From Palm Leaves to Digital Archiving

For centuries, the intellectual heritage of South India was preserved on dried, treated leaves of the Palmyra palm tree. Scribes used a sharp iron stylus (எழுத்தாணி) to incise characters onto the leaf surface before rubbing soot or citronella oil into the grooves to render the text legible.

The Challenge of Physical Degradation

Palm-leaf manuscripts have an average physical lifespan of 300 to 400 years in humid tropical climates. Insect infestation, fungus, brittleness, and monsoon moisture continuously threaten thousands of unpublished manuscripts stored in monasteries and temples.

Pioneers of Preservation

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, scholar U. V. Swaminatha Iyer traveled on foot across rural Tamil Nadu to collect forgotten palm leaves, transcribing and publishing classical Sangam works.

Digital Preservation and AI Transcription

Today, organizations employ multispectral imaging under ultraviolet light, high-resolution scanning at 600+ DPI, and AI Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to preserve handwritten manuscript characters into searchable Unicode text.
