Completed in 1010 CE by Emperor Raja Raja Chola I, the Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur stands as a monumental masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and structural engineering. Reaching a height of 216 feet (66 meters), it was the tallest building in India for centuries and remains one of the largest granite temples in the world.
Mastery over Granite Architecture
What makes Brihadisvara an engineering marvel is the material used. Thanjavur is situated in a fertile river plain with no natural rock outcrops or granite quarries within a 50-kilometer radius. Transporting over 130,000 tons of solid granite to the site required sophisticated logistics, using fleets of elephants and river barges along the Kaveri river network.
Interlocking Dry-Stone Masonry
Unlike modern structures held together by cement or mortar, Brihadisvara was constructed entirely using dry-stone interlocking masonry. Massive granite blocks were carved with precise puzzle-like tenon and mortise joints. The weight of the upper stones locks the lower tiers securely in place, giving the monument remarkable seismic resistance that has endured earthquakes for over a millennium.
The 80-Ton Kumbam Capstone
At the apex of the central vimana tower sits the octagonal Kumbam (capstone), carved from a single block of solid granite weighing approximately 80 tons. According to historical temple inscriptions, royal engineers constructed a 6-kilometer gently sloping earthen ramp starting from the village of Sarapallam to roll the massive stone to the summit.
UNESCO World Heritage Recognition
Together with the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and the Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram, Brihadisvara forms the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Great Living Chola Temples.
