In the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Nations Cup women’s hockey tournament, India defeated Japan 2-1. With this victory, it qualified for the semifinals.
The tournament, featuring 8 teams, is being held in Auckland, New Zealand. In Group ‘A’, India faced Japan in its second match on Tuesday.
Both teams tried to score from the very beginning. However, neither team could score in the first half. Despite creating scoring opportunities many times, they could not capitalize on them.
The game heated up in the third quarter. In the 33rd minute, Nikki Pradhan brilliantly deflected a shot from India’s Navneet Kaur, and captain Salima Tete converted it cleanly into a goal.
Just two minutes later, Japan’s Hiramitsu (35’) turned a penalty corner into a goal. This brought the score level at 1-1.
In the final quarter, both teams made intense efforts to win, and in the 49th minute, Lalremsiami scored a superb goal by making use of a pass from Sushila Chanu.
India took a 2-1 lead and held on to it until the end to secure the victory.
India, which is at the top of Group ‘A’ with 6 points after defeating the USA and Japan, has qualified for the semifinals. The Indian women’s team will face Uruguay in its final group match on Thursday (June 18).
