The Government Arts and Science College in Kuthalam Union, Mayiladuthurai district, was started in 2020 by the then Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami. Initially, the college functioned in the biology laboratory of the Therazhundur Kambar Government Higher Secondary School. Later, in the very next academic year, as student enrollment increased, the community hall in Kathiramangalam village in Kuthalam taluk was converted into a college.
At present, more than 350 students are studying at this college, coming from various villages surrounding the Kuthalam union, such as Komal, Mozhaiyur, Thiruvalangadu, Cholapuram, and Mekkrimangalam. As this college enters its seventh academic year, the question of permanent building facilities remains unresolved. Due to the lack of proper building facilities, students face certain difficulties in learning, and the college’s enrollment rate continues to decline year after year.
When speaking to the college students about this,
“Our college is surrounded by fields. Our college is right in the middle of the fields. Because of this, snakes and insects come and go now and then. The building inside is divided into separate classrooms with asbestos sheets. Because of that partition, there is a small gap above. Through that gap, the sound from one class can be heard clearly in another class. We can hear the lesson being taught in our class too. We can also clearly hear the lesson being taught in the class next to ours. Because of this, we cannot properly understand the lesson being taught in our class. The path leading into our college is a red-soil path. In summer, it is easy to walk on. But in the rainy season, it becomes very difficult. During the rainy season, it does not look like a road at all. It becomes muddy and slushy. It is very hard to walk through that slush and mud. At that time, many people who came by vehicle have fallen.”
We don’t even have a library to sit and study in. The boys in our college have won a lot of prizes at the district and university levels in sports. But none of those boys even have a ground to practice on.
From the outside, our college doesn’t even look like a college. They say the face is the address. But our college’s face itself is dull and lifeless. The government should quickly make some arrangement and build our college for us. They should ensure that the students who come next at least get a college with all facilities and good quality,” they said.
When speaking further about this with the college principal, Soundaran, he said, “Of the 7 colleges started in 2020-21, 6 have moved into permanent new buildings. Only the Kuthalam college is still operating in a community hall without a permanent location. Since there should be 15 classrooms for 5 departments, but there are only 8 classrooms, the college has been functioning on a rotational basis, with 3 departments in the morning and 2 departments in the afternoon.”
As a result, the student enrollment rate has also been declining by only two to three percent per year. Three years ago, a site was selected from the mutt for building the college. The mutt had also agreed to that location. However, the mutt is now saying it will provide a different site instead, and since the Collector has refused, a case has been filed in the High Court in January 2025 on behalf of the mutt. The Collector said that this case will end well and expressed hope that the college can be built soon," he said.
Speaking to us, Kuthalam Tahsildar Ravichandran said, “It has only been two months since I joined the post. Please speak to the Assistant Executive Engineer about this,” and ended the conversation briefly.
The Assistant Executive Engineer, who spoke to us, said, “A case has been filed in the High Court on behalf of the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam, seeking to provide an alternative site instead of the one selected for building the college. Further action will be taken only after the case comes up for hearing.”
The sole demand of the college students and parents is that the new government, which came to power promising change, should act swiftly through the relevant department and construct a permanent building for the college.

இதனால் மாணவர்களின் சேர்க்கை விகிதமும் ஆண்டுக்கு இரண்டு மூன்று சதவிகிதம் குறைவாகவே உள்ளது. மூன்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ஆதீனத்திடம் இருந்து கல்லூரி கட்டுவதற்கு ஓர் இடமானது தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டது. அந்த இடத்திற்கு ஆதீனமும் சம்மதம் தெரிவித்தது. ஆனால், தற்போது ஆதீனம் அந்த இடத்திற்கு பதிலாக வேறொரு இடத்தினை தருவதாகக் கூறி ஆட்சியர் மறுத்த நிலையில், ஆதீனம் சார்பில் 2025 ஜனவரியில் உயர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு ஒன்று தொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த வழக்கு நல்ல முறையில் முடியும். விரைவில் கல்லூரி கட்டலாம் என நம்பிக்கையூட்டும் விதமாக ஆட்சியர் கூறியிருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.
