இதற்கு முன்பு இரண்டுமுறை அந்தத் தொகுதியில் எம்.எல்.ஏ-வாக இருந்துள்ளார். தற்போது சி.பி.எம் மாநிலச் செயலாளராக இருக்கும் எம்.வி.கோவிந்தன் இந்த முறை சட்டசபை தேர்தலில் போட்டியிட மாட்டேன் என அறிவித்துவிட்டார்.

சுயேச்சையாகப் போட்டியிடுவதோடு காங்கிரஸ் கூட்டணியான யு.டி.எஃப் தன்னை ஆதரித்தால் அதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வேன் எனவும் கூறியுள்ளார்.
இதுகுறித்து டி.கே.கோவிந்தன் கூறுகையில், “கட்சியின் விதிப்படி இரண்டு முறை எம்.எல்.ஏ-வாக இருந்தவர் மூன்றாவது முறை போட்டியிடக்கூடாது. ஆனால், எம்.வி.கோவிந்தன் நான்காவதாக எம்.எல்.ஏ ஆக வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்தார். அவர் இப்போது மாநிலச் செயலாளராக இருப்பதால் அது நடக்காது.

மாவட்டக் குழு கூட்டத்திலும், மண்டலக் குழு கூட்டத்திலும் மூன்று பேரைத் தவிர மற்ற அனைவரும் பி.கே.சியாமளாவைப் போட்டியிட வைக்கும் முடிவைக் கடுமையாக எதிர்த்தனர். அந்தக் கூட்டத்தில் எம்.வி.கோவிந்தனும் இருந்தார். மனைவியை வேட்பாளராக நிறுத்த வேண்டாம் என்று அவரிடம் நேரடியாகவே கோரிக்கை வைக்கப்பட்டது.
பி.கே.சியாமளாவிற்குப் பதிலாக என்.சுகன்யா உள்ளிட்ட பலருடைய பெயரையும் மாவட்டச் செயற்குழு பரிசீலித்து. ஆனால், அவற்றை மாநிலச் செயற்குழுவிற்கு அனுப்பவில்லை. இறுதியில் பி.கே.சியாமளாவின் பெயரை மட்டும் மேல்மட்டக் குழுவிற்கு அனுப்பி அதை அங்கீகரிக்க வைத்துள்ளனர். எனவே கட்சியில் இருந்து விலகி தளிப்பறம்பு தொகுதியில் சுயேச்சையாகப் போட்டியிடுகிறேன்” என்றார்.
சி.பி.எம் கட்சியில் 63 ஆண்டுகளாகச் செயல்பட்ட ஜி.சுதாகரன் அம்பலப்புழா தொகுதியில் சுயேச்சையாகப் போட்டியிடுவது கட்சி பலமாக உள்ள ஆலப்புழா மாவட்டத்தில் பலவீனத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளது. அதுபோன்று தளிப்பறம்பு தொகுதிதில் 60 ஆண்டுகளாகச் செயல்பட்ட டி.கே.கோவிந்தன் சுயேச்சையாக களம் இறங்கியுள்ளதால் சி.பி.எம் கட்சியின் எஃக்கு கோட்டையான கண்ணூர் மாவட்டத்தில் சலசலப்பை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளது.
