In the Nations Cup hockey tournament being held in New Zealand, the Indian women’s team defeated the United States 3-2 in their opening match on Monday.
In this match, the United States’ Ashley Sessa gave her team the lead by scoring in the 4th minute itself. Then, Madeline Zimmer (7’) scored for that team, and as the U.S. extended its lead to 2-0, the pressure on India increased.
At this stage, Deepika, who opened India’s scoring in the 17th minute, impressed by increasing it to 2 in the 24th minute. This brought the match level at 2-2. Before the first half ended, Navneet Kaur scored in the 28th minute, giving India a 3-2 lead.
In the second half, with the directions switched, India displayed a wall-like defense, and the United States’ goal attempts did not bear fruit. In the end, India won 3-2.
India will face Japan in the next match on Tuesday (June 16).
