Chief Minister Vijay traveled to Delhi last week on an official visit and has returned. He met Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The fact that the Chief Minister avoided meeting journalists during this trip has become a major talking point.
Usually, when the Chief Minister or a minister goes to Delhi and meets someone of the Prime Minister’s high stature, they finish the meeting and then explain the gist of it to journalists.
All the Chief Ministers we have seen — Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa, Stalin, and Edappadi Palaniswami — have followed this custom. The current Chief Minister did not do so.
Even when journalists called out loudly and asked, “Please don’t break tradition, sir,” Vijay paid no attention at all. Even at the thanksgiving meeting taking place today in Tiruchirappalli, the section for the media has been set up separately, away from the hall where the event is being held. This may come as a shock to many. But for journalists who have closely followed the party called TVK and Vijay, none of this would have been surprising.
Because Vijay has been groomed this way by his strategy team. Staying away from journalists and not meeting them is a tactic Vijay has followed for a long time.
Vijay’s party office is farther away than any other party office. Journalists from media organizations located in the city center can reach Vijay’s Panaiyur TVK office only if they travel at least 25 km.
In all other parties, they have a WhatsApp group to share party-related news and events with journalists.
They will share updates there about everything — district secretaries’ meetings, MLAs’ meetings, party events, and more. They will also politely invite you to come and cover the news.
We can never expect this kind of approach from TVK. TVK also has such a WhatsApp group.
But in that group, they share updates about events only occasionally, whenever they feel like it. Otherwise, journalists have to use their own sources to find out about the event and rush to Panaiyur.
From the very beginning of Seashore 8th Avenue, where Vijay’s office is located, bouncers stand guard. And many of them are from outside the state.
They have no idea what media outlets exist in Tamil Nadu. To them, a journalist is simply someone who holds a microphone and a camera.
So they allow only channel reporters into that street, after making them wait a bit. They have no information at all about daily or weekly newspapers.
They make it a struggle just to let their reporters in. I have experienced this harassment all the way up to the last meeting Vijay held at the YMCA.
Even after getting past all that and entering 8th Avenue, they would set up four barricades with ropes and 15 bouncers outside the office to block and confine journalists in the scorching sun.
They celebrated it in February as the party’s third-anniversary inauguration. On those days, as if it were some kind of riot-control measure, they had put up barricades and barriers in three layers and stationed bouncers in front of them.
This is all a setup to protect Vijay from journalists. Even the government would not provide such a huge security ring for a prime minister.
We would have gone to cover the meeting Vijay holds with his administrators. But we would not even be able to take a photo of Vijay or a short video clip.
He will arrive at the office in a car completely covered with black stickers, surrounded by bouncers.
He would just return to the office in exactly the same setup. A journalist who traveled 25 km to gather news would have nothing to show the public.
In every party, at party meetings, the media is allowed to take visuals for the first 10–15 minutes. After that, they will meet the journalists regarding the meeting. None of that happens here. Only very recently have they started arranging press meets after the meetings through C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar.
On one or two occasions, Anand would tell reporters, as if showing great magnanimity, “I’ll ask the leader to get down in front of the gate.” Even then, he would be clear about one thing. He would firmly say that no journalist should have a microphone in hand.
Even after he said that, only one journalist was still holding a microphone in his hand. Immediately panicking, Anand asked in a playful, pleading tone, “Sir, Raja, please put that mic aside and come here...” When the journalist said, “Sir, the wire hasn’t even been connected to it. There’s no problem...”, Anand saved Vijay from the microphones by saying, “No, Raja, don’t we know you...? Please just leave the mic under the tree and come back...”
It has been two and a half years since the party was started. Do you know which was the official press meet held inside the party office during these two and a half years?
Did Sengottaiyan join TVK or not... On that day, Sengottaiyan had met the press at the Panaiyur office.
This was an incident that happened until a few months ago. Before that, not even a single official press meet had been held at that office.
Channel reporters and cameramen would tear their hair out trying to get visuals of the meetings held in Panaiyur. They would park their cars in front of the Panaiyur office gate, climb on top of them, and shoot the footage needed for the news in a dangerous manner. Standing there holding up the tripod, they would risk their lives.
It was at a private resort in Mahabalipuram that Vijay has held most of his party events. Even at that Mahabalipuram hotel, reporters are not allowed inside the event venue. They set up a tent far outside the hall and seat the reporters there itself. Vijay would be brought in very comfortably through another route, without being seen by any journalist, and then safely escorted back out again.
A reporter would have gone there to cover Vijay’s gathering, but by the end of the day, Vijay would not have been seen by the reporters even for a second. They themselves would share the videos and photographs of the event, as per the party’s preference.
We have no choice but to report based on that alone. Even during the candidate introduction meeting last time, they did not allow journalists inside the star hotel in Nungambakkam and made them sit in the car parking area to gather news.
People keep talking about the fact that Vijay does not hold press conferences, but no one talks about how Vijay’s side treats journalists.
No other party can be said to have treated journalists with such little respect as the TVK has. Vijay is a top star. Crowds gather to see him. Why would someone like that need to meet journalists? One side may ask this question in support of Vijay.
A press meet is not a tool for measuring someone’s stardom. A person’s stardom does not diminish merely by meeting journalists. Journalists are representatives of the people. On social issues, they cannot directly ask politicians the questions that people have.
In that case, it is the reporters, who are their representatives, who should ask those questions. It is only through a press conference that one can understand a leader’s administrative ability and social awareness.
In the current situation, people can learn through a press conference whether a leader is independent-minded or dependent on others. The Vijay side has not understood any of this.
The most important thing in protecting Vijay’s star image is that his strategy team has noted that he should not meet journalists at all. Vijay follows that exactly. TVK leader Vijay can use whatever strategy he wants.
But Chief Minister Vijay does not have that freedom. He sits in the highest office as the representative of the people. The people have entrusted him with a great responsibility. The people, and the media that speaks as their voice, have the right to ask questions. It is the Chief Minister Vijay’s duty to answer them.!

விஜய் தன்னுடைய நிர்வாகிகளுடன் நடத்தும் கூட்டத்துக்கு செய்தி சேகரிக்கதான் சென்றிருப்போம். ஆனால், நம்மால் விஜய்யின் புகைப்படத்தையோ சிறு வீடியோ துணுக்கையோ கூட எடுக்க முடியாது.
முழுவதும் கருப்பு ஸ்டிக்கர்கள் ஒட்டப்பட்ட காரில் பவுன்சர்கள் சூழ அலுவலகம் வருவார்.
அதே செட்டப்பில் அப்படியே அப்படியே அலுவலகத்துக்குள் திரும்பி விடுவார். 25 கி.மீ பயணித்து செய்தி சேகரிக்க சென்ற பத்திரிகையாளருக்கு மக்களிடம் காட்ட எதுவும் இருக்காது.
எல்லா கட்சியிலும் கட்சி கூட்டங்களில் மீடியாக்களை விசுவல் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள முதல் 10-15 நிமிடங்கள் அனுமதிப்பார்கள். முடிந்த பிறகு கூட்டம் தொடர்பாக பத்திரிகையாளர்களை சந்திப்பார்கள். அந்த கதையெல்லாம் இங்கே கிடையவே கிடையாது. வெகு சமீபமாகத்தான் கூட்டங்களுக்குப் பிறகு சி.டி.ஆர்.நிர்மல் குமாரை வைத்து பத்திரிகையாளர்களை சந்திக்க வைக்கிறார்கள்.
ஒன்றிரண்டு சமயங்களில் எதோ பெரிய மனது வைத்து ‘தலைவரை கேட் முன்பாக இறங்க சொல்கிறேன்’ என ஆனந்த் நிருபர்களிடம் கூறுவார். அப்போதும் ஒரு விஷயத்தில் தெளிவாக இருப்பார். எந்தப் பத்திரிகையாளரின் கையிலும் மைக் இருக்கக்கூடாது என்று கண்டிப்பாக கூறிவிடுவார்.
ஒரு முறை அப்படி அவர் கூறிய பிறகும் ஒரே ஒரு பத்திரிகையாளர் மட்டும் கையில் மைக்கை வைத்திருந்தார். உடனே பதறிப்போன ஆனந்த், ‘ஐயா ராசா அந்த மைக்கை கொஞ்சம் ஓரமா வச்சிட்டு வாப்பா….’ என விளையாட்டாக கெஞ்சும் தொனியில் கேட்டார். ‘சார் அதுலயே வயரே கனெக்ட் பண்ணல. ஒண்ணும் பிரச்னை இல்ல…’ என அந்த பத்திரிகையாளர் கூற, ‘இல்ல ராசா உங்களை பத்தி எங்களுக்கு தெரியாதா…நீங்க மரத்தடியில மைக்கை வச்சிட்டு வந்துடுங்க..ப்ளீஸ்’ எனக் கேட்டு விஜய்யை மைக்குகளிடமிருந்து காப்பாற்றினார் ஆனந்த்.
கட்சி ஆரம்பித்து இரண்டரை ஆண்டுகள் ஆகிவிட்டது. இந்த இரண்டரை ஆண்டுகளில் கட்சி அலுவலகத்துக்குள் வைத்து அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக நடந்த பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பு எது தெரியுமா?
செங்கோட்டையன் தவெகவில் இணைந்தார் இல்லையா…அந்த நாளில் செங்கோட்டையன் பனையூர் அலுவலகத்தில் வைத்து பத்திரிகையாளர்களை சந்தித்திருந்தார்.
சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு வரை நடந்த சம்பவம் இது. அதற்கு முன்பு வரைக்கும் அந்த அலுவலகத்தில் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக ஒரு பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பு கூட நடத்தப்பட்டிருக்கவில்லை.
பனையூரில் நடக்கும் கூட்டங்களின் விசுவல் கிடைக்காமல் சேனல் நிருபர்களும் கேமராமேன்களும் தலையை பிய்த்துக் கொள்வார்கள். பனையூர் அலுவலகத்தின் கேட் முன்பாக காரை நிறுத்தி அதன் மீது ஏறி அபாயமான முறையில் செய்திக்கு வேண்டிய காட்சிகளை எடுப்பார்கள். ட்ரைபேடை தூக்கிப் பிடித்த படி நின்றே அவர்களின் உயிர் போகும்.
மகாபலிபுரத்தில் உள்ள தனியார் விடுதியில்தான் விஜய் தனது கட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகளை அதிகமாக நடத்தியிருக்கிறார். அந்த மகாபலிபுரம் ஹோட்டலிலும் நிருபர்களை நிகழ்வரங்குக்குள் அனுமதிக்கவே மாட்டார்கள். அரங்கை விட்டு வெளியே தொலைவில் ஒரு கூடாரத்தை போட்டு அங்கேயே நிருபர்களை அமர்த்திவிடுவார்கள். விஜய்யை மிக சௌகரியமாக எந்த பத்திரிகையாளரின் கண்ணிலும் படாமல் வேறு வழியாக அழைத்து வந்துவிட்டு மீண்டும் பத்திரமாக அழைத்து சென்றுவிடுவார்கள்.
விஜய்யின் கூட்டத்தை கவர் செய்யதான் ஒரு நிருபர் சென்றிருப்பார், ஆனால், அன்றைய நாளின் முடிவில் ஒரு நொடி கூட விஜய் நிருபர்களின் கண்ணில் பட்டிருக்கமாட்டார். நிகழ்வின் வீடியோக்களையும் புகைப்படங்களையும் (கட்சி விருப்பத்துக்கேற்ப) அவர்களே பகிர்வார்கள்.
அதை மட்டும் வைத்து நாம் செய்தி வெளியிட்டுக் கொள்ள வேண்டியதுதான். கடைசியாக வேட்பாளர் அறிமுக கூட்டத்தின் போது கூட பத்திரிகையாளர்களை நுங்கம்பாக்கம் நட்சத்திர விடுதியில் உள்ளே அனுமதிக்காமல் கார் பார்க்கிங்கில் செய்தி சேகரிக்க அமர வைத்தார்கள்.
விஜய் பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்புகளை நடத்துவதில்லை என்பது பேசப்படுகிறதே ஒழிய, விஜய் தரப்பு பத்திரிகையாளர்களை எப்படி நடத்துகிறது என்பதை யாரும் பேசுவதே இல்லை.
தவெக அளவுக்கு பத்திரிகையாளர்களை மதிப்பு குறைவாக நடத்திய கட்சி வேறெதுவும் இல்லை என அடித்துக் கூறலாம். விஜய் ஒரு உச்ச நட்சத்திரம். அவரை பார்க்க மக்கள் கூட்டம் மொய்க்கிறது. அப்படிப்பட்டவர் பத்திரிகையாளர்களை சந்திக்க வேண்டிய தேவை என்ன இருக்கிறது? என ஒரு தரப்பு விஜய்க்கு ஆதரவாக கேள்வி கேட்கலாம்.
பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் சந்திப்பு ஒன்றும் ஒருவரின் நட்சத்திரத்தன்மையை அளவிட்டுக் கொள்வதற்கான கருவி அல்ல. பத்திரிகையாளர்களை சந்திப்பதால் மட்டுமே ஒருவரின் நட்சத்திரத்தன்மை தேய்ந்தும் விடாது. பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் மக்களின் பிரதிநிதிகள். சமூக பிரச்னைகள் சார்ந்து மக்களுக்கு இருக்கும் கேள்விகளை அரசியலர்களை நோக்கி அவர்களால் நேரடியாக கேட்க முடியாது.
எனில், அவர்களின் பிரதிநிதிகளாக இருக்கும் நிருபர்களே அந்த கேள்விகளை கேட்க வேண்டும். பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பின் வழியேதான் ஒரு தலைவரின் நிர்வாக திறனையும் சமூகப் புரிதலையும் அறிந்து கொள்ள முடியும்.
இப்போதைய சூழலில் ஒரு தலைவர் சுயசிந்தனை கொண்டவராக இருக்கிறாரா பிறரை நம்பியவராக இருக்கிறாரா என்பதையும் பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பின் வழிதான் மக்கள் அறிய முடியும். இந்த விஷயத்தையெல்லாம் விஜய் தரப்பு உணரவே இல்லை.
விஜய்யின் நட்சத்திரத்தன்மையை பொத்தி பாதுகாப்பதில் மிக முக்கியமானது அவர் பத்திரிகையாளர்களை சந்தித்து விடவே கூடாது என்று அவரின் வியூக வகுப்பு குழு நோட் போட்டு கொடுத்திருக்கிறது. அதை விஜய் அப்படியே பின்பற்றுகிறார். தவெக தலைவர் விஜய் என்ன வியூகத்தை வேண்டுமானாலும் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாம்.
ஆனால், முதல்வர் விஜய்க்கு அந்த சுதந்திரம் இல்லை. அவர் மக்களின் பிரதிநிதியாக உச்சப்பதவியில் அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார். மக்கள் அவரின் கையில் பெரிய பொறுப்பை கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். மக்களுக்கும் மக்களின் குரலாய் ஒலிக்கும் ஊடகங்களுக்கும் கேள்வி கேட்கும் உரிமை இருக்கிறது. அதற்கு பதில் சொல்ல வேண்டியது முதல்வர் விஜய்யின் கடமை.!
