The Supreme Court on Thursday (June 18) ordered that forests across the country must be protected.
The Supreme Court issued this order, pointing out that Jharkhand has natural ecosystems that need to be protected.
In Jharkhand, last January, the state High Court had ordered that permission should not be granted for stone quarries or stone-crushing plants within one kilometer of the boundaries of protected forests.
This ruling was delivered in response to a petition seeking an order to reduce the already notified boundary from 400 to 500 meters to 250 meters.
Following this, the Jharkhand High Court had stated in its April order that the restriction requiring stone quarries to be located 500 meters away from forest boundaries and stone-crushing plants 400 meters away would apply.
Challenging this, the case was appealed in the Supreme Court. Accordingly, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V. Mohana heard it today.
The judges said:
“We cannot undermine the views of our High Courts. We are not headmasters to advise High Courts on what they should and should not do. High Courts are also constitutional courts.
Moreover, this empowered body has already reduced the distance that was granted. The High Court itself should deliver the final verdict in this case. However, forests must be protected across the country, including in the state of Jharkhand,” they said.

நாடு முழுவதும் உள்ள காடுகளைப் பாதுகாக்க வேண்டும் என்று உச்சநீதிமன்றம் வியாழக்கிழமை (ஜூன் 18) உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது.
ஜார்க்கண்ட் மாநிலத்தில் பாதுகாக்கப்பட வேண்டிய இயற்கை சூழல் அமைப்புகள் உள்ளதைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி இந்த உத்தரவை உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் பிறப்பித்துள்ளது.

ஏற்கெனவே அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட எல்லையாக இருந்த 400 முதல் 500 மீட்டரை 250 மீட்டராக குறைக்க உத்தரவிடும்படி, தாக்கல் செய்த மனுவுக்கு எதிராக இந்தத் தீர்ப்பை வழங்கியுள்ளது.
இதனையடுத்து, ஜார்க்கண்ட் மாநில உயர் நீதிமன்றம் தனது ஏப்ரல் மாத உத்தரவில் கல் குவாரி அமைப்பதற்கு காடுகளின் எல்லைகளிலிருந்து 500 மீட்டர் தொலைவுக்கும், கல் உடைக்கும் ஆலைகள் 400 மீட்டர் தொலைவிலும் அமைப்பதற்கான கட்டுப்பாடு பொருந்தும் என்று கூறியிருந்தது.
