"On the one hand, they say they will close liquor shops, but on the other hand, the TVK government is opening new liquor shops in the name of a recreation club," Anbumani Ramadoss has alleged, causing a stir.
The incident that took place in the Pennagaram area is the reason behind Anbumani's public allegation.
A recreation club was recently opened on the Aadhanur-Mangarai branch road near Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district. During the previous administration, officials made several attempts to open a TASMAC shop here, but they were unable to do so due to continuous protests by the people.
Residents of the area, outraged that a liquor shop has now been opened under the name “Manamagizh Mandram,” have once again launched a protest with the support of parties including the DMK and PMK, making the Pennagaram area tense.
In Dharmapuri district, where many people depend solely on agriculture due to a lack of adequate employment opportunities, the Pennagaram constituency is extremely backward.
Social activists say that in this area, the number of people becoming addicted to alcohol, regardless of whether they are young or old, is increasing, leading to problems in families, disputes between communities, and criminal incidents.
On one side, there are government-run TASMAC shops; on the other, liquor is being sold 24 hours a day through illegal backstreet shops. Even after complaints were made to the authorities, no action was taken, so last month women themselves smashed four backstreet liquor shops in Podur village.
This incident was widely praised and created a stir across Tamil Nadu.
After coming to power, the TVK government ordered the closure of 717 Tasmac shops located near bus stands, schools, and places of worship.
In this situation, people allege that the support of Pennagaram TVK MLA Gajendran was the reason why the Tasmac shop near Mangarai, which had not been opened due to continuous public protests, was opened as a recreation club.
With cases having been filed against more than a hundred people who took part in the protest, when the state administrator of the Social Justice Council, which has been leading the agitation, spoke to lawyer Mahalingam, he said, "In this area, where a large number of poor and ordinary people live, the government decided during the previous administration to open a liquor shop.
We have been mobilizing people and protesting against it since 2021. Through the then PMK MLA, and by submitting petitions to the district administration, the police, and the Prohibition and Excise Department, we also passed a resolution at the village council meeting stating that a liquor shop should not be allowed in the area under the Mangarai and Anjelaavali panchayats, and for the past five years we have been preventing it.
A person who made money by running a liquor shop in this area had obtained a license to run a bar (FL2) during the previous administration and came to open it with the help of officials. Even then, we staged a protest, petitioned the Collector, and stopped it.
We thought that now, with the change in government, we could finally live peacefully. But the same person reopened the bar on May 28. In protest, we gathered people from ten villages and staged a demonstration on the 30th.
The police, which did not grant permission for the protest, filed a case against us. The reason this liquor shop, which had been blocked for 5 years, has now been transformed and opened here is solely the pressure from TVK MLA Gajendran. He is close to the license holder.
At a time when Chief Minister Vijay has announced that liquor shops will be gradually reduced and shops in areas facing public opposition will be closed, his party MLA is showing interest in opening a liquor shop.
Even though it is currently closed, liquor sales are still continuing indirectly. To permanently shut this down, we will hold a much bigger protest next," he said.
Condemning this, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said, "On the one hand, they say they will close 717 liquor shops, but on the other hand, the TVK government is opening new liquor shops under the name of 'Manamizh Mandra'. In Mangarai, after people had been protesting against the liquor shop for a long time, now a TVK MLA is behind the opening of the 'Manamizh Mandra'."
The police should withdraw the case filed against the protesting people. Otherwise, a major protest will be held on behalf of the PMK," he has warned.
"If a recreation club is opened with the support of a TVK MLA, ignoring public opposition, we will mobilize the people and stage a protest," said Inbasekaran, the former DMK MLA from Pennagaram, as well.
Regarding this, we asked Pennagaram MLA Gajendran from the TVK, and he said, "I have no connection whatsoever with that recreation club, and I do not even know who is going to run it. I too strongly support the people’s demand that there should be no liquor shop.
Would I act against the people of my constituency? Since I won the election, they cannot tolerate it, so they are dragging my name into this issue for political reasons."
The recreation club, which is currently temporarily closed, may reopen at any time, and if that happens, they say a major protest will take place in the Pennagaram area.

தருமபுரி மாவட்டம் பென்னாகரம் அருகே ஆதனூர்-மாங்கரை பிரிவுச் சாலையில் சமீபத்தில் மனமகிழ்மன்றம் திறக்கப்பட்டது. கடந்த ஆட்சியில் இங்கு டாஸ்மாக் கடை திறக்க அதிகாரிகள் பலமுறை முயற்சித்த நிலையில், மக்களின் தொடர் போராட்டத்தால் திறக்க முடியவில்லை.
தற்போது மனமகிழ் மன்றம் என்ற பெயரில் மதுக்கடையைத் திறந்ததால் கொந்தளித்த அப்பகுதி மக்கள், தி.மு.க, பா.ம.க உள்ளிட்ட கட்சியினரின் ஆதரவுடன் மீண்டும் போராட்டத்தில் இறங்கியுள்ளதால் பென்னாகரம் பகுதி பரபரத்து கிடக்கிறது.
போதிய தொழில் வாய்ப்புகள் இல்லாமல், விவசாயத்தை மட்டும் நம்பியுள்ள மக்கள் அதிகமுள்ள தருமபுரி மாவட்டத்தில், பென்னாகரம் தொகுதியோ மிக மிக பின் தங்கியுள்ளது.
இப்பகுதியில் பெரியவர், சிறியவர் எனப் பாகுபாடில்லாமல் மதுப்பழக்கத்திற்கு அடிமையாகி வருவது அதிகரித்து வருவதால் குடும்பங்களில் பிரச்னைகளும், சமூகங்களுக்கிடையே சச்சரவுகளும், குற்றச்சம்பவங்களும் அதிகரித்து வருவதாக சமூக செயற்பாட்டாளர்கள் தெரிவிக்கிறார்கள்.

தற்போது ஆட்சி மாறியவுடன் இனி நிம்மதியாக இருக்கலாம் என்று நினைத்தோம். ஆனால் அதே நபர் மீண்டும் மனமகிழ் மன்றத்தை கடந்த மே 28 ஆம் தேதி திறந்தார். இதை எதிர்த்து கடந்த 30 ஆம் தேதி பத்து கிராம மக்களை ஒருங்கிணைத்து போராட்டம் நடத்தினோம்.
போராட்டத்துக்கு அனுமதி அளிக்காத போலீஸ் எங்கள் மீது வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்தது. 5 ஆண்டுகளாகத் தடுக்கப்பட்ட மதுக்கடை தற்போது உருமாறி இங்கே வரக் காரணம் த.வெ.க எம்.ஏல்.ஏ கஜேந்திரனின் அழுத்தம்தான். உரிமம் பெற்றவருக்கு அவர் நெருக்கமானவர்.
மதுக்கடைகள் படிப்படியாகக் குறைக்கப்படும், மக்கள் எதிர்ப்புள்ள பகுதியில் இருக்கும் கடைகள் மூடப்படும் என்று முதல்வர் விஜய் அறிவித்துள்ள நிலையில் அவர் கட்சி எம்.எல்.ஏ-வோ மதுக்கடை திறக்க ஆர்வம் காட்டுகிறார்.
தற்போது மூடப்பட்டாலும் மறைமுகமாக சரக்கு விற்பனை ஆகிக் கொண்டுதானிருக்கிறது. இதை நிரந்தரமாக மூட அடுத்து மிகப்பெரும் போராட்டத்தை நடத்துவோம்” என்றார்.
இதைக் கண்டித்து அறிக்கை வெளியிட்டுள்ள பா.ம.க.தலைவர் அன்புமணி ராமதாஸ், “ஒருபுறம் 717 மதுக்கடைகளை மூடுவதாகக் கூறிவிட்டு மறுபுறம் மனமகிழ் மன்றம் என்ற பெயரில் புதிய மதுக்கடைகளை த.வெ.க அரசு திறக்கிறது. மாங்கரையில் மதுக்கடைக்கு எதிராக நீண்டகாலம் மக்கள் போராடி வந்த நிலையில் இப்போது மனமகிழ் மன்றம் வருவதான் பின்னணியில் த.வெ.க எம்.எல்.ஏ உள்ளார்.
போராடிய மக்கள் மீது பதிவு செய்துள்ள வழக்கை காவல்துறை ரத்து செய்ய வேண்டும். இல்லையென்றால் பா.ம.க சார்பில் பெரிய போராட்டம் நடத்தப்படும்” என்று எச்சரித்துள்ளார்.
“மக்கள் எதிர்ப்பை மீறி த.வெ.க எம்.எல்.ஏ ஆதரவில் மனமகிழ் மன்றம் திறந்தால் மக்களைத் திரட்டி போராட்டம் நடத்துவோம்” என்று தி.மு.க-வைச் சேர்ந்த பென்னாகரம் முன்னாள் எம்.எல்.ஏ இன்பசேகரனும் அறிவித்துள்ளார்.
இதுகுறித்து த.வெ.க-வைச் சேர்ந்த பென்னாகரம் எம்.எல்.ஏ கஜேந்திரனிடம் கேட்டோம், “அந்த மனமகிழ் மன்றத்துக்கும் எனக்கும் எந்தச் சம்பந்தமுமில்லை, அதை நடத்த உள்ளவர் யாரென்றே எனக்கு தெரியாது. மதுக்கடை வேண்டாம் என்கிற மக்களின் கோரிக்கையை நானும் வலியுறுத்துகிறேன்.
என் தொகுதி மக்களுக்கு எதிராக நான் நடப்பேனா? தேர்தலில் நான் வெற்றி பெற்றதால் அதைப் பொறுக்க முடியாமல் என் பெயரை இந்த விவகாரத்தில் அரசியலுக்காக இழுத்து விடுகிறார்கள்” என்றார்.
தற்போது தற்காலிகமாக மூடப்பட்டுள்ள மனமகிழ் மன்றம் எப்போது வேண்டுமானாலும் திறக்கப்படாலாம், அப்படி நடந்தால் மிகப்பெரும் போராட்டம் பென்னாகரம் பகுதியில் நடக்கும் என்கிறார்கள்.
