Senior officials of HD KSOE met Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay regarding the state-of-the-art shipbuilding project to be set up in Thoothukudi with an investment of about Rs. 38,000 crore, creating employment for 15,000 people.
Today (June 17), senior officials led by Young Hoon Kwon, Director of the Global Business Division of HD Hyundai (HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering – HD KSOE), met and held discussions with the Chief Minister at the Secretariat.
HD Hyundai, headquartered in South Korea, is one of the world’s largest shipbuilding companies. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish a state-of-the-art shipbuilding complex in Thoothukudi. Senior officials of the company held discussions with Chief Minister Vijay regarding the operational stages of the proposed major shipbuilding yard project here.
About 38,000 crore rupees (4 billion US dollars) is set to be invested in this newly proposed shipbuilding project in India. Through this project, around 15,000 people will get direct employment opportunities. In addition, many more jobs and economic growth will be generated in the state through ancillary industries and the local supply chain.
For this project, a company called National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park Tamil Nadu Limited (NSHIPTN) was formed between SIPCOT and the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA). This company has received the first in-principle approval from the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, for establishing this shipbuilding complex.
During this meeting, senior officials of the company briefed the Chief Minister in detail on the progress of the project. They also expressed the company’s strong interest in implementing this project in Thoothukudi.
Chief Minister Vijay said that the Tamil Nadu government will take all necessary steps to ensure the swift implementation of this project, which is of great importance to Tamil Nadu’s development, in Thoothukudi, and that full administrative support and coordinated cooperation will be provided at every stage of the project.
Following this, HD Hyundai representatives said that every effort would be made to launch the shipbuilding facility soon.
