The Kerala High Court on Tuesday deferred its verdict on the anticipatory bail plea filed by Monalisa Bosle, who became popular on social media through the Kumbh Mela, and her husband Mohammed Furman Khan in a case filed over their interfaith marriage. This case, involving two states, has emerged as a major legal and political controversy beyond just being an interfaith marriage.
After intense arguments over the legality of the marriage, the bride’s age, and the threats faced by the couple, the judge noted that the verdict would be delivered on Wednesday.
During this hearing, the court orally remarked, "It is your good fortune that you are in Kerala." The judge made this remark in the context of claims that they were facing threats in Madhya Pradesh.
In response to the judge's comment, the couple's lawyer said, "That is the only reason we are alive now," causing a major stir in the courtroom.
Monalisa, who became nationally famous through videos of her selling bead garlands at the 2025 Kumbh Mela, married Farmaan Khan in Kerala earlier this year. The marriage sparked a major controversy after allegations surfaced that Monalisa had not yet reached the legal age at the time of the wedding.
Appearing on behalf of the couple, lawyer M. Sachindran argued, "Fundamentalist groups and certain sections of the Madhya Pradesh administration are trying to invalidate this marriage by portraying Monalisa as a minor,".
It was stated on behalf of the couple that Monalisa had already attained the age of majority at the time of the marriage, but that her age-related official records were later corrected.
Appearing on behalf of the Madhya Pradesh government, Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju opposed this anticipatory bail petition. He argued that although the groom was a Muslim, the marriage was conducted according to Hindu religious rites and was therefore not legally valid. He also pointed out that Monalisa’s actual date of birth was December 2009 and, therefore, since she was a minor at the time of the marriage, the case would fall under child protection laws.
The state government told the court that, along with the kidnapping case registered against Furman Khan, allegations of document fraud may also be added, claiming that fake documents were used to obtain birth and marriage certificates.
However, it is noteworthy that the court questioned certain aspects of the state government's argument, asking, "Has the woman said to have been affected not filed any complaint against her husband?" This matter has drawn national attention not only because of Monalisa's fame, but also because parallel cases are being heard in courts in Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.
Meanwhile, in a private complaint filed in the Thiruvananthapuram POCSO court, action has also been sought against CPI(M) leaders M.V. Govindan, V. Sivankutty, and A.A. Rahim, alleging that they helped facilitate this marriage.
