In Cuba, which is facing severe economic sanctions from the United States, the country’s parliament has unanimously approved a historic bill to introduce changes to the socialist economy and privatize various sectors.
This is seen as the biggest revision to the country’s socialist policy since the revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959, and as a major move toward a market economy.
U.S. sanctions, the blockade on oil supplies, and the collapse of the tourism sector have pushed the country into a severe crisis. Subsidized services such as free education and healthcare have been crippled by the economic downturn.
In this situation, privatization has been permitted for the first time in Cuba. State-owned enterprises are set to be converted into private commercial companies with shares and investments.
For the first time, private companies have been allowed to employ more than 100 workers, and a single person has been permitted to start more than one business.
