Based on complaints filed by dissatisfied MLAs, the West Bengal police have frozen three bank accounts belonging to the Trinamool Congress party, which together hold a balance of Rs. 440 crore.
In the West Bengal Assembly election, the Trinamool Congress party lost and was ousted from power. Following this, internal divisions and conflicts against party leader Mamata Banerjee have intensified. The 58 dissatisfied MLAs and 20 dissatisfied MPs are functioning as a separate faction. It is said that the Mamata opposition camp is also actively seeking control of the party leadership and party funds.
In this situation, 10 dissident MLAs, led by dissident MLA and Assembly Opposition Leader Ritabrata Banerjee, filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime police station functioning under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. In that complaint, they raised questions about the source of the money deposited in three accounts belonging to the Trinamool Congress party in a private bank, and demanded that a case be registered and a detailed investigation be conducted into whether the money came through legal means or through illegal channels.
Following this complaint, the police have frozen those bank accounts. Regarding this, a senior official said, ‘We have blocked withdrawals from the three accounts. At the same time, deposits can continue to be made into those accounts,’ he said.
Regarding this action by the police, a Mamata Banerjee-supporting MLA said, ‘We have heard that the police have frozen all three bank accounts. We are waiting for official information about it,’ he said.
Earlier, former Trinamool Congress minister Arup Biswas had written a letter to a private bank regarding this. In it, identifying himself as the Trinamool Congress treasurer, he had requested that up to Rs. 500 crore deposited by the party in 3 accounts at the bank, and that transactions in the accounts be suspended until the dispute related to the party leadership is resolved. Commenting on this, Mamata Banerjee-supporting MLA Kunal Ghosh said, “Arup Biswas is not the party treasurer now; he was removed from that post on the 5th and Subhasis Chakraborty has been appointed. Therefore, Arup Biswas has no authority to speak on behalf of the party regarding party funds.”
Already, the MLAs functioning as a separate group under the leadership of Rituparna Banerjee had created an awkward situation for the Trinamool Congress party and Mamata Banerjee. In this situation, Arup Biswas, who had long been one of Mamata’s most trusted confidants, raising the banner of revolt is being seen as a setback for the party.
