Kovilpatti: Because she fell in love with a young man through Instagram, police arrested the mother and brother who murdered a young woman and then staged a suicide drama.
Selvam, a resident of South Mayilodai village near Kayathar in Thoothukudi district, died a few years ago.
His wife, Esther Palin (36), works at a private company in Gangaikondan SIPCOT. Their 18-year-old daughter had studied up to 11th standard and had been staying at home.
On the night of the 9th, Kayathar police received information that Esther Palin’s daughter had died by hanging in an apparent suicide. The police went to the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for examination.
The postmortem was completed the day before yesterday, and the young woman’s body was cremated in her native place. Meanwhile, an investigation based on the postmortem report revealed that the young woman had been murdered.
Through Instagram, the woman had been in love with a young man from Salem. Her family had opposed this. Even so, the two had continued to meet and stay in touch.
It was found that the young woman died after being severely assaulted by her enraged brother, Sivagnanam (20). Following this, the police arrested Sivagnanam and his mother, Esther Palin, for allegedly aiding the murder.
In a press release issued by the District Superintendent of Police’s office, it was stated as follows: It was found that this incident occurred as a continuation of a dispute with her family, as the deceased young woman had been in contact with someone through social media.
Furthermore, based on the evidence collected and the medical report, it was found that the young woman’s mother and brother were involved in her death. The case was then converted into a murder case, and both were immediately arrested and sent to judicial custody.
In the investigation conducted so far, no evidence has been found to confirm that this incident was an honor killing. The information circulating on social media claiming it to be an honor killing is false. It has been stated that appropriate legal action will be taken against those spreading such rumors and false information.
