State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers conducted a surprise raid today at the Kolkata residence of Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress party.
On May 20, a letter was submitted on behalf of the Trinamool Congress to the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, recommending Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition. However, party MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Chandiban Saha alleged that their signatures on the letter had been forged. Following this complaint, both of them were expelled from the party.
An FIR was registered at Kolkata’s Hare Street police station in connection with this fraud complaint, and the case was later transferred to the CID. It is said that the CID issued multiple summons to Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who had signed this controversial letter. However, he has reportedly cited ill health and, instead of appearing in person, has sought an additional 15 days to respond to the investigation.
In this situation, CID officers who went to Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata’s “30B, Harish Chatterjee Street” area said they needed to search the premises, as this address also serves as the Trinamool Congress party office. Party functionaries gathered there strongly opposed this. As a result, there was a heated argument between the officers and Trinamool Congress leaders for a few minutes. However, the CID team eventually entered the premises and began the search.
Regarding this, former Trinamool Congress MP Subhashish Chakraborty said, "At present, neither Mamata Banerjee nor the party’s general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is at home. So, we requested the officials to come back after a day or two when either of them would be present. But the CID officials refused this and are accusing me of obstructing this investigation," he said.
