Chennai: Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi leader T. Velmurugan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to announce complete prohibition in the state as a customary measure in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly session.
In a statement issued by him on this, he said, “Around 4,787 Tasmac liquor shops are operating across Tamil Nadu. These shops open at 12 noon and close at 10 p.m. In this situation, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the closure of 717 liquor shops on the 12th. After these shops were closed, it is said that illicit liquor, including hooch, is being sold without hindrance in the lanes near the shops (lane shops).
Although resolutions were passed in gram sabha meetings calling for liquor shops to be closed, previous governments did not pay any attention to them. Alcohol sales amount to around Rs. 100 crore every day. On weekly holidays and on holidays such as Pongal, Deepavali, and New Year, these sales double.
The public, as well as various political parties, continue to insist that liquor shops should be closed. Therefore, in the Assembly session, the government should announce that government-run liquor shops and private liquor bars will be closed. This would be the biggest gift the Tamil Nadu government could give to the women of Tamil Nadu.
If there is a greater gift than this, it is complete prohibition. It will truly be a boon for the women of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, an announcement should be made in this Assembly session that complete prohibition will be implemented in Tamil Nadu. He has stated this in that regard.
