Condemning the government’s reluctance to allocate sufficient funding to the military in Britain, the country’s Defence Secretary John Healey suddenly resigned from his post on Thursday.
In his resignation letter to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, John Healey accused the government of compromising national security at a time when threats are increasing globally.
He further noted, “The government has fallen far behind in implementing the investments needed to strengthen military structures in line with the current era. The Prime Minister has failed to ensure the funding necessary to keep the armed forces in a state of readiness,” John Healey said.
As spending on welfare schemes continues to rise, the government has not reached a consensus on how to raise funds to meet military needs. As a result, the release of funding for the British military has been delayed for the past few months.
John Healey had been overseeing the defence department since the ruling Labour Party came to power in July 2024. Already, following last month’s local election defeat, opposition has been growing within the party against Keir Starmer’s leadership. After Health Secretary Wes Streeting, the Defence Secretary’s resignation has further intensified the crisis.
