At a U.S. Air Force base in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, a B-52 bomber crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff, killing all 8 people on board, military officials said.
The accident occurred during a routine test flight at Edwards Air Force Base, located north of Los Angeles. No parts of the crashed aircraft were found.
Those on board included government contract workers and uniformed military personnel.
After reviewing video footage related to the accident, it has been confirmed that there is no chance anyone survived, Colonel James Hayes, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing at Edwards, told reporters.
"We have lost 8 outstanding Americans," Hayes said, adding that efforts were under way to notify their families.
Hayes said the cause of the accident was not immediately known, and that it could take up to six months to complete the investigation into it.
The B-52 bomber aircraft, developed in the 1950s, is used by the U.S. military. It has been used in American military attacks from Vietnam to Iran.
