Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay met Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in Delhi on Saturday.
This meeting has gained significance after the party’s chief whip Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said that 19 of the 28 Lok Sabha members from the Trinamool Congress were with them and that they were the real Trinamool Congress, and that they would meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday (June 15) to seek recognition.
After winning only 80 seats in the West Bengal Assembly election and losing to the BJP, strong discontent began to rise within the Trinamool Congress against the party’s leader Mamata Banerjee.
First, in the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, 58 disgruntled MLAs broke away as a separate faction against Mamata’s decision. After that, 6 more MLAs expressed their support for them. Following this, 20 MPs who broke away as a separate faction from among the 29 Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MPs also confirmed their support for the BJP alliance.
The disgruntled members registered strong opposition to Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and the party’s national general secretary. As a continuation of this, 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from that party resigned from their posts.
As a result, the Trinamool Congress has split into two factions and begun functioning as two separate groups. After Mamata Banerjee participated in the recent INDIA alliance consultative meeting, speculation has also been circulating that there may be a chance for the Trinamool Congress to work together with the Congress again.
In this tense political climate, Trinamool Congress senior leader and MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay met Union Minister Bhupender Yadav along with disgruntled MP Shatabdi Roy at his residence in New Delhi on Saturday. It is noteworthy that Bhupender Yadav is the BJP’s in-charge for West Bengal.
Political experts have said that this political move by Sudip Bandyopadhyay, considered one of the most important figures in the Trinamool Congress’s Delhi circle, will deal a major setback to the party.
