Tears still flow from the families of the 13 people who lost their lives in the Thoothukudi shooting incident. On the 8th anniversary of the event, the families accuse that no criminal action has been taken against those responsible for the Thoothukudi massacre even after 8 years. They have also demanded that Vijay, who has recently taken office as Chief Minister, take action. On the 8th anniversary, we spoke about this with the Thoothukudi District People's Federation against Sterlite.
Due to intense pressure from opposition parties on the then AIADMK government regarding the shooting incident, a one-person inquiry commission was established under the leadership of retired High Court Judge Aruna Jagadeesan. The investigation, conducted over 36 sessions spanning 3 years, summoned 1,426 individuals, of whom 1,048 appeared in person to provide explanations. A total of 1,544 documents were indexed. The comprehensive inquiry report, consisting of over 3,000 pages, was submitted to the then Chief Minister Stalin on May 18, 2022. It stated that the shooting occurred without any orders or provocation from anyone and described it as one of the worst police actions ever witnessed in Tamil Nadu.
At that time, the Thoothukudi District Collector Venkatesh, Thoothukudi SP Mahendran, South Zone IG Saileshkumar Yadav, Nellai Range DIG Kapilkumar Sarkar, revenue department officials, and 17 others took full responsibility for this, and the mistakes of each accused were clearly specified. During the 2021 legislative assembly election campaign, former Chief Minister Stalin, who came to Thoothukudi, said, "The shooting incident was a green massacre jointly carried out by the AIADMK and BJP, and no action has been taken against the accused."
On the 8th anniversary, we said that if we come to power, we will enact a special law and take steps to permanently remove the Sterlite plant. He stated that whoever was responsible for the shooting massacre, regardless of their high position, will be punished. We also waited with hope. However, no criminal action has been taken against them so far. Why did the families receive justice in the Sathankulam incident but not the families who lost their lives in the shooting incident?
