In the 2016 legislative assembly elections, he contested from the Poompuhar constituency on behalf of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) as part of the DMK alliance. For the 2026 legislative assembly elections, IUML members worked intensively to ensure victory by contesting under the DMK alliance. They focused on the Babanasam constituency, which has a significant Muslim population, from the beginning. They also decided to field A.M. Shahjahan.
