At Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar, the total prize money for the current season has been increased by 20 percent.
According to an announcement issued by the Wimbledon organizers on Thursday, the men’s and women’s singles champions will each receive Rs. 45.98 crore in cash prize money. The total prize pool for the tournament has been raised to Rs. 821 crore.
Those finishing as runners-up will receive Rs. 22 crore each, while the prize money for players exiting in the first round is Rs. 1 crore each.
For the first time in the history of the tournament, the prize money has been increased by 20 percent in a single year. With many prominent players calling for prize money for men and women to be raised in Grand Slam tournaments, the Wimbledon administration has taken this step.
It is noteworthy that the players had insisted that the total prize money for this year’s Wimbledon tournament be announced as Rs. 900 crore.
Wimbledon, the oldest Grand Slam tournament in tennis and one played on grass courts, begins this year on June 29.
