அந்தத் தேர்தலில் 14,868 வாக்குகள் வித்தியாசத்தில் சி.வி.சண்முகத்தை தோற்கடித்தார் லட்சுமணன். அதற்கடுத்து ராஜ்யசபா எம்.பி-யாக தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்ட சி.வி.சண்முகம், தி.மு.க-வுக்கு எதிராக அவ்வப்போது காரசாரமாக பேட்டிகள் கொடுத்து வந்தார்.
மயிலம் தொகுதியில் மையம்
இந்த நிலையில்தான் யாருமே எதிர்பாராத சூழலில், வரும் தேர்தலில் மயிலம் தொகுதியில் போட்டியிட விருப்பம் தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார் சி.வி.சண்முகம். அதற்குக் காரணம் அவரது சொந்த ஊரான அவ்வையார்குப்பம் அந்தத் தொகுதிக்குள் வருவதாலும், வன்னியர்கள் பெரும்பான்மையாகக் கொண்ட தொகுதி என்பதாலும் அந்தத் தொகுதியை குறி வைத்திருக்கிறார்.

அதன்பிறகு ஓ.பி.எஸ் – இ.பி.எஸ் இணைப்பு நிகழ்ந்தவுடன், லட்சுமணனிடம் இருந்து அனைத்துப் பதவிகளையும் பறித்து மீண்டும் சி.வி.சண்முகத்திடம் கொடுத்தார் இ.பி.எஸ். அதன்பிறகு அரசியல் பரமபதத்தில் சடாரென கீழே இறங்கினார் லட்சுமணன். அதையடுத்து அவர் மேலே வருவதற்கான சிறு வாய்ப்பைக் கூட சி.வி.சண்முகம் தரப்பு தரவில்லை.
