Salem New Bus Stand, spread over approximately 5 acres on Omalur Main Road, is operating as the fourth largest bus stand in Tamil Nadu. From this bus stand, buses are operated not only to various districts but also to states such as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. More than 3,000 buses operate here every day. Although it has been officially named the Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G.R. Central Bus Stand, people mostly continue to call it the "New Bus Stand."
This bus stand was established in 1985. It has since been renovated several times.
In 2024, during the DMK regime, it was renovated at an estimated cost of about Rs. 24.80 lakh.
Upon learning that various issues are currently prevailing at the bus stand, we went there in person, inspected it, and spoke with the public to gather their views.
We have compiled and presented the views shared by the passengers, members of the public, auto drivers, bus drivers and conductors, and sanitation workers who were there.
"Major issues..."
The surroundings of the bus stand are in an unhygienic condition. Although trash bins have been placed in various locations, garbage is still lying in the open. Furthermore, even though the bus stand has free and paid toilets for men, women, and persons with disabilities, most people urinating in the surrounding areas of the bus stand has become a major problem.
Regarding this, people say,
Although the main reason for this is the irresponsibility of most people, there are other reasons as well. When some buses drop passengers off right at the station entrance before going inside (for the convenience of those traveling on rural buses), instead of going to the toilets inside the station, they urinate in a hurry near the bus drop-off point itself.
The reason is that the toilets are located at the far end inside the bus station. In addition, there are no signboards at the entrance indicating where the toilets are. The free toilets are in a somewhat unclean condition. Also, even the paid toilets charge 5–10 rupees.
As a result, the public find it difficult to walk along that road. It is also said that auto drivers are suffering from mosquito bites.
What is the solution?
If measures such as installing mobile toilets at the entrances of bus stations, putting up signboards directing people to the restrooms inside, maintaining free toilets in a clean condition, and charging a lower fee for paid toilets are implemented, this situation could change, people say.
According to sanitation workers, all the toilets are cleaned every day.
When asked about this, the transport workers there say, “This has nothing to do with us! Our job is to operate the buses! The municipal sanitation workers are the ones who should take care of all this.”
Furthermore, we spoke with Mr. Ekaraj, the Assistant Commissioner of the Suramangalam Zone of the Salem Municipal Corporation. He said, “On behalf of the municipal corporation, continuous cleanliness work has been going on. Every day, at least 7-10 workers are engaged in cleaning work.
There are toilets at about seven locations. Recently, due to the low number of visitors, one toilet has been closed, and another toilet is being renovated. Action has also been taken regarding complaints about overcharging, and signboards have been put up. Therefore, continuous work is being carried out on the government’s behalf. The main reason for this is the public’s irresponsibility.

As per the public’s request, we are considering placing a mobile toilet at the entrance. Directional signboards for the toilets will be installed soon," he said.
At such an important bus station used by thousands and thousands of people, maintaining hygiene is not only the responsibility of the authorities and sanitation workers... The people who use the bus station must also take responsibility for this deplorable situation and cooperate in keeping the station clean!

சேலம் புதிய பேருந்து நிலையமானது, ஓமலூர் பிரதான சாலையில் சுமார் 5 ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில், தமிழ்நாட்டின் நான்காவது பெரிய பேருந்து நிலையமாக இயங்கி வருகிறது. இந்தப் பேருந்து நிலையத்திலிருந்து பல்வேறு மாவட்டங்கள் மட்டுமன்றி கர்நாடகா, ஆந்திரா, கேரளா போன்ற மாநிலங்களுக்கும் பேருந்துகள் இயக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. நாள் ஒன்றுக்கு சுமார் 3000-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பேருந்துகள் இயக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. அதிகாரபூர்வமாக பாரத ரத்னா டாக்டர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் மத்திய பேருந்து நிலையம் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டிருந்தாலும், மக்கள் பெரும்பாலும் “புதிய பேருந்து நிலையம்” என்றே கூறிவருகின்றனர்.
இந்தப் பேருந்து நிலையம் 1985-ல் நிறுவப்பட்டுள்ளது. பின்னர் பல்வேறு முறை புத்துருவாக்கமும் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.
கடந்த 2024 -ல் தி.மு.க ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் சுமார் 24.80 லட்சம் ரூபாய் மதிப்பீட்டில் புத்துருவாக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.
தற்போது பேருந்து நிலையத்தில் பல்வேறு சிக்கல்கள் நிலவிவருகின்றன என்ற தகவல் அறிந்து, நேரில் சென்று பார்வையிட்டு மக்களிடம் கருத்துக்களைக் கேட்டோம்.
அங்கு இருந்த பயணிகள், பொதுமக்கள், ஆட்டோ ஓட்டுநர்கள், பேருந்து ஓட்டுநர் மற்றும் நடத்துநர்கள், தூய்மைப் பணியாளர்கள் எனப் பலரும் பகிர்ந்த கருத்துக்களை தொகுத்து வழங்கியுள்ளோம்.
“முக்கிய பிரச்னைகள்…”

பெரும்பாலான மக்களின் பொறுப்பற்ற தன்மையே இதற்கு முக்கிய காரணமாக இருந்தாலும், வேறு சில காரணங்களும் உண்டு. சில பேருந்துகள் உள்ளே செல்வதற்கு முன்பு நிலையத்தின் வாசலிலேயே (ஊரகப் பேருந்துகளில் பயணிப்பவர்களுக்கு வசதியாக ) பயணிகளை இறக்கிவிடுகையில், நிலையத்தின் உள்ளே இருக்கும் கழிவறைகளுக்குச் செல்லாமல், அவசரத்தில் பேருந்து இறக்கிவிடும் இடத்திற்கு அருகிலேயே சிறுநீர் கழிக்கின்றனர்.
காரணம் கழிப்பறைகள் பேருந்து நிலையத்தின் உட்பகுதியில், கடைசியில் உள்ளது. மேலும், கழிப்பறைகள் எங்கு உள்ளன என்ற வழிகாட்டி பலகைகளும் வாசலில் இல்லை. இலவச கழிவறைகள் சற்று தூய்மையற்ற நிலையில் இருக்கின்றன. மேலும், கட்டணக் கழிப்பிடங்களிலும் 5-10 ரூபாய் பெறுகின்றனர்.

மேலும், சேலம் மாநகராட்சியின் சூரமங்கலம் மண்டல உதவி ஆணையர் திரு.ஏகராஜை தொடர்பு கொண்டு பேசினோம். அவர், “மாநகராட்சியின் சார்பில் இருந்து தொடர் தூய்மைப் பணிகள் நடந்து கொண்டேதான் இருக்கின்றன. தினந்தோறும் குறைந்தது 7- 10 பணியாளர்கள் தூய்மைப் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டுவருகின்றனர்.
சுமார் ஏழு இடங்களில் கழிப்பறைகளும் உள்ளன. சமீபத்தில் மக்களின் குறைவான வருகையினால் 1 இடத்தில் கழிப்பறை மூடப்பட்டும் உள்ளது, மேலும் ஒரு கழிப்பறை மீட்டுருவாக்கமும் செய்யப்பட்டு வருகிறது. அதிக கட்டணம் வசூலித்தல் தொடர்பாக வந்த புகாருக்கும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டு, பதாகைகளும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஆகையால் அரசின் சார்பிலிருந்து தொடர் பணிகள் நடைபெற்று கொண்டேதான் இருக்கின்றன. மக்களின் பொறுப்பற்றத் தன்மையே இதற்கு முக்கிய காரணமாக உள்ளது.
அடுத்தக்கட்ட நடவடிக்கைகள்..
மக்களின் கோரிக்கையின் படி வாயிலில் நடமாடும் கழிப்பறை வைப்பது பற்றி ஆலோசனை செய்கிறோம். கழிவறைக்கான வழிகாட்டி பதாகைகள் விரைவில் அமைக்கப்படும்” என்று தெரிவித்தார்.
ஆயிரம் ஆயிரம் மக்கள் புழங்கும் இத்தகைய முக்கிய பேருந்து நிலையத்தில், சுகாதாரம் பேண வேண்டியது, அதிகாரிகள், தூய்மைப் பணியாளர்கள் பொறுப்பு மட்டுமல்ல… பேருந்து நிலையத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தும் மக்களும், இந்த அவலத்துக்குப் பொறுப்பேற்று, நிலையத்தின் தூய்மையைக் காக்க ஒத்துழைப்பு நல்க வேண்டும்!
