The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that the scheme for taking back empty liquor bottles will be completely revamped.
Tourists visiting hill stations throw plastic bottles and liquor bottles here and there, posing a danger to wildlife.
To prevent this, a special bench comprising judges N. Sathishkumar and T. Bharatha Chakravarthy, which has been hearing cases related to environmental and wildlife protection, had ordered that in TASMAC shops in hilly areas, liquor bottles be sold for an additional Rs. 10, and that if empty bottles are returned, the Rs. 10 be refunded.
When this case came up for hearing again today, Chief Advocate Vijay Narayan, appearing for the government, stated that the scheme to collect empty liquor bottles has been implemented in all districts in Tamil Nadu except three districts.
He noted that the scheme would be completely revamped and that the possibility of not involving TASMAC employees in the work of collecting empty liquor bottles would be examined.
At that time, the judges said, `When an additional ten rupees is charged per bottle for the return of empty bottles, it should be mentioned on the receipt, and charging an extra 10 rupees should not be taken as a license to collect excessive fees from customers.'
In response, the Chief Advocate explained, `This government will never tolerate corruption.'
Following this, the judges adjourned the case to July 10, directing that a report be filed within 8 weeks regarding the restructuring of the empty liquor bottle return scheme, and also ordering that a report on the progress of the measures taken for the restructuring be filed within 4 weeks.
