At the Canadian Open tennis tournament, top players Alexander Zverev of Germany and Daniil Medvedev of Russia were both knocked out on Thursday after losing in their opening matches.
It is noteworthy that both of them, who received first-round byes in the men’s singles category, entered directly into the second round. In the second round held on Thursday, Zverev, who was the top seed and the reigning French Open champion, lost to Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in sets of 7-6 (7/3), 2-6, 4-6.
The former US Open champion and fourth seed Medvedev lost to the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp 3-6, 6-7 (5/7). Similarly, the seventh seed and recently crowned Washington DC Open champion, American Taylor Fritz, also fell to Argentina’s Diego Trantede in straight sets, 5-7, 3-6.
Similarly, France’s Ugo Humbert (24th seed), Russia’s Karen Khachanov (21), and Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo (16) also suffered shocking defeats to unseeded players. On the other hand, America’s Learner Tien, Tommy Paul, the Czech Republic’s Jakub Menšík, and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi advanced to the third round.
Gauff, Andreeva win: In the women’s singles second round, fourth seed and two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff of the United States defeated fellow American Kayla Day in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, ranked 5th, easily eliminated Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-2. Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova, ranked 6th, lost to America’s Katie McNally 6-7 (5/7), 1-6.
Recently crowned Washington DC Open champion, the Philippines’ young player Alexandra Eala defeated America’s Alicia Parks in sets of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
In other matches, Japan’s Naomi Osaka, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, Russia’s Ludmila Samsonova, and Belgium’s Elise Mertens also won and advanced to the third round.
