Police are investigating the incident in which a woman attempted suicide by setting her saree on fire at the Secretariat.
At the Chief Minister’s special section in the Secretariat, when a woman who had come to submit a petition on Monday was told by staff to bring copies of some of the documents she was carrying, she came out from there and set her saree on fire using a matchbox she had hidden.
Seeing this, the police personnel on security duty there poured water on the woman and rescued her. The police sent the woman to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
In the investigation conducted by the Fort police in this regard, the person who attempted suicide was J. Archana (40), from Pachaiamman Nagar near Gingee in Villupuram district. Some people had demolished the house she was living in. Even after she sought action against those concerned, the officials did not take any action.
Following this, Archana filed a case in the civil court regarding this. But there too, government officials who appeared as witnesses allegedly gave false testimony. It has now come to light that, frustrated by this, Archana set herself on fire when she came to the Secretariat to file a complaint.
