New Delhi: A case concerning the introduction of warning labels on the front of packaged food products high in sugar, salt, and fat, in order to raise awareness among consumers and children about the nutritional risks posed by packaged foods, came up for hearing in the Supreme Court. The bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran heard the case.
At that time, the judges expressed strong displeasure to the Central Government counsel over the non-implementation of the earlier order issued by the court in this matter. The judges said: “Are you taking the court lightly? If you remain negligent and do not implement the orders, strict action will have to be taken.
However much pressure there may be, you must still follow the court order, mustn’t you? What action have you taken so far? Shouldn’t the people of this country be healthy? Especially, shouldn’t growing children be well? What hesitation is there in issuing warning notices on packets? Manufacturers may not like it; but consumers must definitely know what they are consuming. The purpose is to create awareness among the public,” the judges sharply raised questions.
Furthermore, they warned that if the Central Government failed to implement the court’s recommendations on its own, the court itself would be compelled to issue appropriate orders. Finally, the judges adjourned the hearing, warning that a proper decision regarding printing warning statements on packet foods must be taken and submitted to the court within two weeks; otherwise, strict orders would be issued.
