Top seed Elena Rybakina advanced to the fourth round at the Toronto Masters WTA tournament. French Open champion Mirra Andreeva was knocked out after a loss.
World No. 2 and reigning Australian Open champion Rybakina of Kazakhstan defeated 28th seed Ann Li of the United States 6-2, 7-5 in straight sets. Rybakina played brilliantly in the 90-minute match.
Rybakina-Samsonova clash:
In another match, Russia’s Lyudmila Samsonova battled past Australia’s Maya Joint 7-5, 7-6, 6-2.
Samsonova is up against Rybakina. In the matches played between the two, Samsonova leads 4-2. However, Rybakina has won the last two WTA matches.
In another match, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez defeated Russia’s young player Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4 in an 80-minute contest. With this, Leylah ended a streak of seven consecutive defeats. Last year, she had defeated fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula in the Washington WTA tournament. Since then, this is the first time she has beaten Andreeva, who is currently ranked fifth. Andreeva committed 34 unforced errors in this match.
Osaka-Leylah clash
In another match, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan defeated Belgium’s top player Elise Mertens 6-1, 6-2 to qualify for the round of 16. The match lasted 71 minutes. Osaka hit a total of 7 aces and converted 4 of 8 break points.
Osaka will face Leylah Fernandez.
Coco Gauff-Eala qualification
In another match, America’s Coco Gauff defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4 in a match that lasted 76 minutes. Russia’s 19-year-old player Alina Korneeva beat America’s Ivajovic 6-3, 6-4 in an 82-minute match.
Coco Gauff and Alina Korneeva will face off in the round of 16.
The Philippines’ young player Alexandra Eala defeated America’s Katie McNally in a 2.5-hour match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Switzerland’s 12th seed Belinda Bencic beat America’s Taylor Townsend in a three-and-a-half-hour match, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Eala and Belinda will meet in the round of 16.
