With the assembly election set to be held in Uttar Pradesh, the ruling BJP is seriously considering a welfare scheme of up to Rs. 50,000 for women.
The assembly election is due to be held next year in Uttar Pradesh, which has 403 assembly constituencies.
After delivering a shock to the ruling BJP in the Lok Sabha election by winning 37 of the 80 seats, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party is expecting to strengthen its hand in the assembly election as well, and is actively working to bolster its alliance with the Congress.
At the same time, the ruling BJP government led by Yogi is making efforts to demonstrate its strength. Moreover, Yogi Adityanath is keen to become chief minister for a third time.
In this situation, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s announcement that if the party returns to power, women will be given an annual allowance of Rs. 40,000 has further intensified the contest between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party.
Meanwhile, although details of the financial assistance scheme have not been disclosed, sources say the UP government is considering providing up to Rs. 50,000 to women ahead of the 2027 election. It is also said that Rs. 20,000 will be deposited as the first installment, followed by three installments of Rs. 10,000 each.
According to data officially released by the Election Commission of India after the special intensive revision of the electoral roll, Uttar Pradesh has 133,984,792 voters. Of these, there are 7,30,71,061 (54.54%) male voters, 6,09,09,525 (45.46%) female voters, and 4,206 (0.01%) third-gender voters.
This scheme is also expected to be similar to the schemes announced for women ahead of elections in Bihar, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
In the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Bihar, Delhi, and elsewhere, the financial assistance scheme for women completely transformed the BJP’s chances of victory. It is noteworthy that in Maharashtra, the Ladki Bahin scheme; in Bihar, the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana; in Haryana, the Deen Dayal Lado Lakshmi Yojana; and in Madhya Pradesh, the Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana—all these schemes helped secure victory prospects in the assembly elections.
