In the central part of temple city Madurai, in the Goripalayam–Sellur area, desilting work on the drainage channel of "Sellur Kanmoi" has been under way for the past three months.
At present, due to the drainage work, the sewage pipes on both sides of the canal have been blocked. As a result, a break has occurred in the sewage pipeline, and underground sewage has been entering roads and residential areas for several weeks, creating a risk of infectious diseases.
Residents of the area say that even after lodging a complaint with the Madurai Corporation about this issue, no action has been taken by the concerned department.
Residents of Pandalkudi staged a road blockade, demanding the speedy completion of the tank’s drainage work, protesting that sewage is mixing with drinking water and that their daily lives have been disrupted, while children who go to school every day and infants are suffering from mosquito bites.

Even a little rain has created the risk of sewage entering homes in residential areas such as Pandalkudi, Kansapuram, Abdul Rahman, Jahangir Khan, and Jamburoopuram, which are located near the canal.
Due to this road blockade, vehicles lined up along the route from Madurai Simmakkal area through Yanaikkal, Vaigai flyover, and Sellur Goripalayam connecting road, causing traffic to be disrupted for more than an hour.
After the police held peace talks, those involved in the blockade gathered by the roadside, and traffic was restored.
