Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s former head of government and Nobel laureate, who is under house arrest in the country, met and spoke with a representative of the International Red Cross on Monday.
This is the first time since the Myanmar military seized power in February 2021 that an international representative has met Aung San Suu Kyi, who had been cut off from the outside world, and that an official photograph of her has been released.
In a photograph officially released by the media division of the Myanmar presidential palace, Aung San Suu Kyi is seen meeting and shaking hands with Arnaud de Baecque, the Red Cross representative in Myanmar.
Kim Aris, the younger son of Aung San Suu Kyi, who welcomed this meeting, stressed, “This is the first positive news about my mother to emerge in the past 5 years. However, she should be released unconditionally along with all political prisoners.”
