The Chennai High Court ordered DMK former minister K.N. Nehru to respond in a case filed by the Income Tax Department alleging that income was not shown in the accounts.
The Income Tax Department conducted raids in 2018 at two companies where DMK former minister K.N. Nehru’s brother Manivannan is the managing director, and seized documents.
Accordingly, alleging that Rs. 17 crore in income and Rs. 11 crore in investments were not shown in the accounts, the Income Tax Department’s assessing officer issued an order in 2019 by adding those amounts to the accounts.
K.N. Nehru appealed against this order before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. Accepting this appeal, the Income Tax Commissioner set aside the order issued by the assessing officer.
Against this order, the Income Tax Department filed an appeal before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. After hearing the appeal, the tribunal dismissed the Income Tax Department’s appeal, stating that there was no evidence to prove the connection between the income said to have been undisclosed by K.N. Nehru and the company of which Manivannan is a director.
Following this, the Income Tax Department filed a petition in the Chennai High Court challenging the order of the appellate tribunal. The case came up for hearing on Friday before a bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arulmurugan.
After hearing the case, the judges ordered former minister K.N. Nehru to respond to this petition within four weeks and adjourned the hearing.
