New Delhi: Over the past 8 years, 274 people who fled India have been brought back to India from 36 countries, the Central Government said.
A press release issued by the Union Home Ministry in this regard said: The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a decisive stand against fugitive criminals. From 2019 to 2026, 274 fugitive criminals have been brought back to India from 36 countries.
India has developed a coordinated, intelligence-based, technology-driven action plan against fugitives. This has paved the way for taking stringent action against them and makes it easier for them to return to India.
Previous governments lacked the political will to bring fugitives back. However, the Modi government has made the deportation of fugitives a national priority.
The central government's actions against fugitive criminals are built on three key pillars. Global operations, strong coordination, and smart diplomacy are those three key pillars.
The escape of criminals is intrinsically linked to the country’s sovereignty, economic stability, law and order, and national security. Keeping this in mind, the government introduced continuous legal provisions to strengthen the extradition framework.
Under the Modi government, there has been a significant increase in the issuance of Interpol Red Corner Notices. In the past three years, notices have been issued against 401 fugitive criminals.
The Modi government introduced Bharatpol. As a result, more than 1,400 agencies have been connected to Interpol. Through this, the time required for sharing information has been reduced from 3 to 10 days.
The Modi government enacted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Amendment Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act in 2019. In addition, by strictly enforcing the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, assets worth Rs. 17,874 crore belonging to fugitive criminals were seized from 2019 to 2026.
It has been reported that Rs. 18,762 crore, including funds, has been successfully recovered from economic offenders who fled the country from 2019 to 2026.
