Chennai: To raise awareness about cervical cancer and to emphasize women’s safety and empowerment, the ‘Singapen Marathon 2026’ was held yesterday at Chennai’s Island Grounds.
About 3,000 women participated enthusiastically in it. The Rotary Club of Madras Central, Inner Wheel Clubs under District 323, and the Singapen Special Force jointly conducted the awareness run, which was open only to women.
8-kilometer run
Yesterday (on the 9th), the marathon began at 6 a.m. from Chennai Island Grounds. From there, the run covered 8 kilometers, passing along Marina Beach up to the lighthouse and then returning to Island Grounds.
About 3,000 people took part, including college students, working women, homemakers, and women police officers from the Singapore Special Force.
K. Bhavaneeswari, the head of the Singapore Special Force and a police IG, attended as the special guest and flagged off the marathon.
Through this run, awareness was created among women about early detection of cervical cancer and prevention of the disease through vaccination.
Women’s Safety
Speaking at the event, IG K. Bhavaneeswari said that the main aim of this marathon is to raise awareness about preventing cervical cancer while also emphasizing women’s safety and empowerment together.
By participating in the race together with the public, the female police officers from the Singapore Special Task Force also had the opportunity to interact directly with women.
The event also instilled confidence that the Singapore Special Task Force will work steadfastly to ensure women are safe at all times and to provide them with the assistance they need.
In addition, awareness was raised that women can seek help in emergencies by using the police’s ‘1091 helpline number’.
